PRIMARY FUNCTION :

The role involves executing diagnostic and therapeutic responsibilities under the guidance and oversight of the supervising surgeon. This position is designed to enhance the physician's ability to deliver effective medical services through informed decision-making essential for diagnosis and treatment planning. The individual will also assist in collecting necessary data to implement the surgeon's therapeutic strategies. This role requires qualifications to provide care tailored to patients within specific age demographics in designated clinical areas.
Furthermore, the physician assistant will serve as a patient advocate within the healthcare system, acting as a confidant, advisor, and intermediary between patients and medical professionals.
Direct reporting to the surgeon is required for all patient-care-related activities. Charting privileges will be established by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee based on the surgeon's recommendations. The role necessitates direct interaction with medical staff, nursing teams, and other departments to coordinate patient care effectively.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Deliver clinical assistance in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
  • Conduct patient evaluations in a clinical setting, performing standard medical assessments and treatments, which may involve: gathering medical histories, executing physical examinations, providing patient counseling, etc., and carrying out minor outpatient surgical procedures when suitable, documenting all actions in line with established protocols.
  • Develop patient assessments and preliminary care plans, ensuring all activities are documented in accordance with established policies.
  • Administer post-operative care by assessing patients' physical conditions to prevent secondary complications post-surgery, including suture and staple removal, wound fluid aspiration, and providing necessary patient care in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain patient records through electronic medical record systems for updates and billing purposes.
  • Conduct hospital rounds with the physician or independently to monitor patients' current health status.
  • Execute other non-surgical healthcare tasks as delegated by the supervising physician, consistent with the physician assistant's training and experience.
  • Function as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) involved in diagnosing and initiating treatment for trauma patients in collaboration with the Trauma Attending.
  • Act as a liaison for nursing staff, medical personnel, social services, pastoral care, and other hospital departments concerning the management of trauma service patients.
  • Coordinate patient care from the Emergency Department through inpatient services.
  • Handle patient inquiries and triage calls as necessary.
  • Engage with colleagues, visitors, and other staff in alignment with the iSCORE values of the institution.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
  • Prescribe, dispense, and administer medications and medical devices as delegated by the supervising physician, adhering to federal regulations.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality to protect personal and financial information, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and practice standards.
  • Facilitate the care transition of general trauma service patients by coordinating with ancillary services and families for outpatient follow-up.
  • Order and assess lab, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests as required.
  • Prescribe medications and recommend treatments following established federal and state regulations.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary floor rounds when available.
  • Maintain professional development through supervision, continuing education, and relevant learning opportunities.
  • Assist the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager in fulfilling State designation requirements and American College of Surgeons verification standards.
  • Support educational needs assessments for pre-hospital personnel, nurses, and physicians.
  • Provide policy and procedure training to those involved with the Trauma Acute Care Surgery program.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Trauma Medical Director.
  • Integrate performance improvement into professional practice.
  • Participate in Trauma Committees, including Trauma Morbidity and Mortality reviews and Trauma Multi-disciplinary Operations Committee.
  • Communicate performance improvement issues to the Division Director and team members.
  • Liaise with referring physicians regarding patient care.
  • Conduct ongoing departmental quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the supervising physician and director of physician extender services.
  • Fully utilize and maintain proficiency with the institution's medical record system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Master's Degree

National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

ACLS and BCLS certification

5 years of clinical experience preferred
