PRIMARY FUNCTION :

The primary responsibility of this role is to assist the surgeon in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, thereby enhancing the physician's ability to provide effective care. The individual will support the surgeon in gathering essential data for diagnosis and therapeutic planning. This position requires qualifications to deliver care to patients within the designated age group in the assigned clinical area.
Furthermore, the physician assistant will serve as an advocate for patients within the healthcare system, acting as a confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients and medical professionals.
The physician assistant will report directly to the surgeon regarding all patient care activities. Charting privileges will be established by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee based on the surgeon's recommendations. The role involves direct interaction with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other departments to ensure coordinated patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide clinical assistance in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
  • Conduct patient evaluations in a clinical setting, which includes obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and providing patient counseling, as well as executing minor outpatient surgical procedures when appropriate, documenting all actions in line with established protocols.
  • Develop preliminary patient care plans based on assessments and document all activities in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Deliver post-operative care by assessing patients' physical conditions to prevent secondary complications post-surgery, including suture removal and specific patient care as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate office notes for patients using the electronic medical records system for record-keeping and billing purposes.
  • Conduct hospital visits to monitor patients' physical conditions, either alongside the physician or independently.
  • Execute other non-surgical healthcare tasks as permitted by training and delegated by the supervising physician.
  • Collaborate with Trauma Attending in diagnosing and initiating treatment for trauma patients.
  • Act as a liaison for nursing staff, medical staff, social services, pastoral care, and other hospital departments regarding the management of trauma service patients.
  • Ensure continuity of care from the Emergency Department through inpatient services.
  • Manage patient communications and triage calls as necessary.
  • Interact with colleagues, visitors, and other staff in alignment with the organizational values.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
  • Prescribe and administer medications and medical devices as delegated by the supervising physician, adhering to federal regulations.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality to comply with HIPAA and practice standards.
  • Facilitate the care transition of trauma service patients by coordinating with ancillary services and families.
  • Order and interpret results from laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with established regulations.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds when available.
  • Maintain professional development through supervision, continuing education, and relevant learning opportunities.
  • Assist the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager in meeting state designation and verification requirements.
  • Support educational needs assessments for pre-hospital personnel, nurses, and physicians.
  • Provide policy and procedure training to those involved with the trauma program.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Trauma Medical Director.
  • Integrate performance improvement initiatives into professional practice.
  • Participate in Trauma Committees, including Trauma Morbidity and Mortality reviews and Multi-disciplinary Operations Committee.
  • Communicate performance improvement issues to the Division Director and team members.
  • Engage with referring physicians regarding patient care.
  • Conduct ongoing departmental quality improvement studies in collaboration with the supervising physician and director of physician extender services.
  • Fully utilize and maintain proficiency with the institution's medical record system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree
National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
ACLS and BCLS certification
Preferred: 5 years of experience in a clinical setting
