The Orthopaedic Trauma Specialist is an integral member of the healthcare team, reporting directly to the Orthopaedic Manager and working closely with Orthopaedic surgeons. This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities aimed at delivering exceptional patient care in a hospital setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough evaluations of orthopaedic patients under the guidance of an Orthopaedic surgeon and develop comprehensive treatment plans. Ensure all hospital documentation is completed accurately.
- Prepare orthopaedic patients for surgical procedures by ensuring timely completion of necessary consultations, laboratory tests, and diagnostic imaging.
- Assist in surgical procedures, including first-assisting, skilled wound closure, and application of post-operative dressings. Maintain meticulous perioperative documentation and orders.
- Perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, demonstrating validated competency and adherence to privileges.
- Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, in accordance with an active DEA license.
- Provide on-call coverage at a Level II Trauma facility, managing emergent orthopaedic cases effectively.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, ensuring ongoing communication with staff, patients, and their families.
- Maintain all professional licenses and certifications, fulfilling Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
- Engage in research opportunities and contribute to performance improvement initiatives, demonstrating financial responsibility through efficient resource utilization.
- Participate in regular Advanced Practice Provider meetings and educational events.
- Act as a mentor to Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner students, fostering a respectful and engaging learning environment.
- Exhibit a solid understanding of common orthopaedic injuries and their treatments.
- Demonstrate proficiency in splint and cast application, wound management, joint aspiration, and bedside procedures.
- Exhibit competence or a willingness to learn techniques such as major joint reduction and skeletal traction application.
- Adhere to sterile techniques in all procedures.
Education:
Master's Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. CRNP with RNFA certification.
Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of experience in Orthopaedics is preferred, with a focus on orthopaedic trauma being highly desirable.
Certifications:
ACLS, BLS, and DEA certification are required.
