Position Summary

The role involves conducting diagnostic pulmonary assessments as directed by a physician. Key responsibilities include performing pulmonary function evaluations on pediatric and adult patients, which encompass spirometry, static lung volume measurements, diffusion capacity assessments, plethysmography (TGV and RAW), impulse oscillometry, arterial blood gas sampling, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and exercise challenge evaluations. Additionally, the role includes administering bronchodilators and other medications, conducting maximum respiratory pressure tests, methacholine challenges, pulse oximetry, six-minute walk tests, metabolic/calorimetry studies, basic life support, and assisting with bronchoscopy procedures.

Furthermore, the position requires educating medical personnel, new hires, students, patients, and visitors regarding the responsibilities associated with this role. Effective communication with all members of the patient care team, patient scheduling, maintaining precise records, disinfecting and sterilizing equipment, and performing clerical duties are also essential. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Conduct pulmonary function assessments.
    • 1.1 Review and schedule patients for evaluations in accordance with established protocols.
  • 2. Maintain the necessary skill level to deliver all services offered by the pulmonary laboratory.
    • 2.1 Stay updated on new technologies, equipment, and procedures by reviewing relevant literature.
  • 3. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding diagnostic evaluations.
    • 3.1 Ensure effective communication concerning patients' test results following departmental protocols.
  • 4. Lead the laboratory in the absence of the Senior Technologist.
    • 4.1 Plan and allocate shift responsibilities based on staff skills and departmental staffing guidelines.
  • 5. Assist in the training and orientation of students and new staff.
    • 5.1 Provide instruction in line with departmental policies.
  • 6. Perform arterial blood gas punctures and assist with fiberoptic bronchoscopy as needed.
    • 6.1 Verify the operational status of equipment and adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • 7. Engage in Quality Management and Performance Improvement initiatives.
    • 7.1 Collect data on all quality management metrics.
  • 8. Keep all clinical competencies current and achieve at least minimal passing scores.
    • 8.1 Complete all online competencies as they become due.
  • 9. May assist and/or perform chaperone duties for patient medical procedures as required.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of college-level courses in science and mathematics. Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Technology program for new hires.

Experience: 1-3 years of experience in Pulmonary Function.

Licensure: Current RPFT or RRT credentials. Candidates hired after a specified date must maintain a Connecticut RCPT license.

Special Skills: Strong background in mathematics and science; one year of college-level courses in these subjects is preferred. Proficient computer skills and the ability to troubleshoot equipment and utilize testing and scheduling applications are essential.

Physical Demands: MMR vaccination is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or proof of prior chicken pox is necessary. Hepatitis B vaccination (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccinations are strongly encouraged. The role requires regular standing, walking, and use of hands; occasional sitting, stooping, kneeling, or crawling; and frequent lifting/moving of up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock risks, and vibrations, with a generally moderate noise level.
