This role is with the Nashville / Davidson County Sheriff's Office. A Correctional Officer Recruit is responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of individuals detained in a correctional institution. This position involves various related responsibilities as necessary.

*Upon successful completion of the accredited training program, the salary will increase to $52,000. After a six-month probationary period, the salary will rise to $57,958.26.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety and welfare of inmates
  • Monitoring the movement of inmates within the facility
  • Conducting thorough searches of cells, inmates, and visitors
  • Preparing detailed reports
  • Documenting incidents and disciplinary actions
  • Supervising inmate work assignments and overseeing meal distribution
  • Providing security for inmates during transport to hospitals, courts, and other designated locations
  • Assisting with the processing of inmates as required
  • Transporting inmates to various locations as necessary

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position involves significant risks, including exposure to potentially hazardous situations and unusual environmental stressors, necessitating a range of safety precautions. Employees work in a correctional setting that demands physical endurance and the ability to handle hazardous and stressful circumstances. Flexibility in work hours, including shifts and weekends, is required, and employees must be capable of self-defense or protecting others from physical harm.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess a High School Diploma or a state-issued GED, be at least twenty-one (21) years old, and be a U.S. Citizen.
A valid Driver's License may be necessary for certain positions.

Individuals who have served in any branch of the military must provide a copy of their DD214 long-form. Discharge statuses other than "honorable" may disqualify candidates from consideration for employment due to state regulations. If you received an Entry Level Separation or General Discharge under Honorable Conditions, you may be eligible to apply for a waiver. Please include all relevant documentation along with your DD214 in your application.

According to state law, any applicant who has been convicted of, or has pleaded guilty to, or has entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or any violation of federal or state laws or municipal ordinances related to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances will not be eligible for employment.

Candidates with qualifications obtained from foreign institutions are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must participate in a Written Examination and Physical Standards Test as part of the selection process. Invitations to these examinations will be sent via email to qualified candidates. Ensure your email address is current. The written exam is conducted monthly, and candidates who pass will be invited to the physical standards test, which is also scheduled monthly. Candidates must successfully complete both components of the test to be placed on the eligibility register.

Note: As per Metro Ordinance No. SO, all employees of the Metropolitan Government must be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents within six (6) months of employment as a condition of employment with the Metropolitan Government.
