Job Title: Patient Account Specialist

Overview

The Patient Account Specialist plays a critical role in the revenue cycle of Eastern Virginia Medical School, ensuring accurate and timely billing and coding of patient accounts. This position is responsible for extracting and updating CPT and ICD-10 codes, data entry, denials, patient account research, and insurance follow-up.

Responsibilities

  • Enter inpatient and outpatient charges in accordance with carrier regulations.
  • Research and assign the most accurate CPT and ICD-10 codes based on provider dictation and medical records.
  • Audit and review coding selections to ensure appropriateness and accuracy.
  • Work closely with providers to ensure timely submission of notes for claims processing.
  • Follow up with providers on missing information and respond to denials.
  • Review tasks in the EHR daily and maintain close relations with hospital staff and referring offices.
  • Authorize procedures and verify benefits with insurance companies.
  • Maintain compliance with policies and procedures within the Department of Generalist OB/GYN, Minimally Invasive and Gynecologic Surgery, Urogynecology, and Maternal Fetal Medicine.
  • Assist with conducting regular coding education and training classes for providers and staff.
  • Make recommendations on implementing procedures for compliance within the department setting.
  • Provide feedback to management on problem areas and inform providers, management, and staff of insurance carrier regulation changes.
  • Stay up-to-date on compliance, coding, and billing literature and guidelines affecting OBGYN practices.
  • Function as a liaison between providers and the EVMS Medical Group Billing Office.

Qualifications

An Associate's degree plus at least one year of experience working with CPT and ICD-10 coding in a surgical setting is required. Prior experience with OBGYN coding and billing is strongly preferred. Current CPC certification or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment is required.
