Position Overview:

The Emergency Care Veterinarian will be tasked with delivering prompt and thorough medical attention to patients. Responsibilities include performing physical assessments, interpreting diagnostic results, and administering appropriate treatments. The veterinarian will maintain precise records of all services provided and ensure effective communication with clients and referring veterinarians regarding patient conditions and treatment strategies. Furthermore, the Emergency Care Veterinarian will engage in promoting the practice and contribute to the training and development of interns and externs.

This role involves providing guidance and daily coaching to veterinary technicians and assistants within the emergency care team. The Emergency Care Veterinarian will lead efforts to ensure exceptional care for patients and their families while fostering a positive work atmosphere. Key skills required include attention to detail, strong communication abilities, triage skills, and the capacity to delegate tasks effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

LEADERSHIP

  • Collaborate with fellow veterinarians and staff to cultivate a supportive work environment that meets the needs of pet owners, patients, support staff, and doctors while embodying our core values.
  • Provide daily coaching and direction to the team of technicians and assistants in the emergency care department.
  • Enhance workflow processes to achieve positive patient outcomes and improve the experience for pet owners and staff.
  • Contribute to shaping the hospital culture by leading through example in daily interactions that reflect our core values.
  • Engage the team in collaborative problem-solving efforts.
  • Ensure clear and consistent communication with all team members and clients.
  • Participate in regular meetings and performance reviews for the emergency care team, alongside leadership.
  • Set annual and quarterly goals for self and direct reports, with regular progress evaluations.
  • Maintain accountability for achieving goals and assist the team in overcoming obstacles.

OPERATIONS

  • Collect and document patient histories.
  • Conduct thorough physical examinations.
  • Provide, perform, and interpret laboratory, radiographic, and other diagnostic tests.
  • Administer necessary therapeutic measures for medical and surgical treatments while maintaining accurate records.
  • Keep clients informed about their pets' status and ensure informed consent for treatments.
  • Promote the practice and its services.
  • Manage cases across all departments as needed.
  • Participate in educational rounds and training for interns, externs, and residents.
  • Conduct in-house continuing education sessions.
  • Induce and monitor patients during anesthetic and sedation procedures.
  • Administer medications and treatments via various routes.
  • Utilize computer systems for medical record maintenance.
  • Assist in training new staff and ensure effective training practices are upheld.
  • Uphold safety policies and standard operating procedures specific to the emergency care department.
  • Maintain professional cleanliness and organization in the hospital environment.
  • Attend continuing education sessions to enhance technical, medical, and leadership skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine.
  • Previous experience in emergency medicine, urgent care, or high-volume general practice is preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience in a multi-specialty and emergency veterinary hospital is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry approximately 40 lbs independently and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
  • Capability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk throughout the day.
  • Manual dexterity to work with small instruments and larger equipment.
  • Willingness to wear protective gear as required.
  • Capacity to work in a dynamic environment with various animal sounds and potential exposure to bodily fluids.
