Job Summary

The Chicago Park District is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Physical Instructor to join our team. As a Physical Instructor, you will be responsible for planning, promoting, organizing, conducting, and instructing all physical activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Development: Plan and implement course curricula for instruction of sports, games, and competitive athletics.
  • Instruction and Supervision: Provide instruction and supervision to patrons in sports, games, and competitive athletics.
  • Technical Demonstrations: Demonstrate proper techniques and skills for recreation and athletics.
  • Adaptation and Innovation: Adapt programs to reflect differing levels of participant skill development.
  • Advanced Instruction: Provide instruction in advanced strategies of team and individual sports, physical fitness, and conditioning.
  • Rules and Regulations: Provide information on rules of individual and team sports.
  • Basic Activities: Explain basics of low-organized activities.
  • Rhythm and Movement: Instruct rhythm and movement.
  • Safety and Risk Management: Enforce and promote safety guidelines for recreation and athletic activities.
  • Conflict Resolution: Resolve conflicts among participants.
  • Equipment Management: Issue and maintain inventory of recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Apparatus Setup: Set up recreation apparatus and equipment.
  • Officiating: Officiate team and individual sports.
  • Sportsmanship and Creativity: Promote sportsmanship and encourage creativity in participants.
  • Communication: Communicate constructively with participants, parents, volunteers, and community.
  • Community Engagement: Consult with individuals and community groups to determine their interests, needs, and desires.
  • Tournament Management: Determine tournament eligibility requirements, verify dates and standards, and establish schedules for tournaments, leagues, and competitions.
  • Meetings and Workshops: Conduct meetings on competitions and other special events, and conduct and attend workshops and in-service training seminars.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Supervision: Supervise unorganized play and enforce rules and regulations.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure, Social Services, Education, Special Education, Child Development, or a comparable major.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of Park and Recreation experience or a related field, or 20 hours from an accredited college in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or Physical Education and at least four (4) years of work experience in Park and Recreation or a related field.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of athletic, leisure, and recreational theories and principles, skill in teaching recreational, leisure, and athletic activities, effective oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to evaluate skill levels and teach recreational, leisure, and athletic activities accordingly.
