Lead Engineer, Commercialization Strategy

Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been committed to developing the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced DriverTM—to enhance mobility access and prevent traffic-related fatalities. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over one million rider-only trips completed, the Waymo Driver has autonomously navigated tens of millions of miles on public roads and simulated tens of billions of miles across more than 13 U.S. states.
Our Software Engineering team is responsible for creating the intelligence behind Waymo's autonomous driving technology. Our software enables the Waymo Driver to understand its surroundings, make informed decisions in every scenario, and transport individuals safely to their destinations. We tackle intricate technical challenges in fields such as robotics, perception, decision-making, and deep learning, while collaborating closely with hardware and systems engineers. In this position, you will:
- Assume a technical leadership role for specific components of Waymo One's backend systems. The precise team will be determined based on your skills and interests, with options including vehicle scheduling, dynamic pricing, partner APIs, and experimentation.
- Establish a robust long-term technical framework while addressing the immediate requirements of Waymo One. As our service is still in its early stages, adaptability and the ability to reprioritize tasks will be essential.
- Experience as a technical lead on a significant backend initiative, involving multiple components.
- Collaboration with diverse teams, including non-engineering departments, ensuring that technical solutions align with product objectives and timelines.
- Experience working across various elements of a complex technology stack, rather than concentrating solely on one software component.
- A reputation as a problem-solver in previous roles, recognized by leadership for your ability to engage in projects and provide clarity and direction.
- Proficiency in navigating complex backend systems, including live debugging and understanding existing codebases.
- Experience with C++ and distributed systems.
- At least one year of experience in a transportation company or a similar consumer-focused environment.
The anticipated salary range for this full-time position across various U.S. locations is outlined below. Actual starting compensation will be influenced by job-related factors, including work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
