The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over one million rider-only trips completed, our technology has autonomously navigated millions of miles on public roads and billions in simulations across more than 13 U.S. states.
Team Overview:
The TaaS (Transportation as a Service) and Ride-Hailing Infrastructure team is responsible for creating essential backend systems and on-vehicle software that enable Waymo's autonomous vehicles to function at a large commercial scale. We tackle intricate technical challenges in areas such as Vehicle Route Optimization, Scalability, and Capacity Planning, collaborating with software engineers, data scientists, and product managers both on and off the vehicle.

- Optimizing the marketplace to balance supply and utilization of Waymo's autonomous vehicle fleet.
- Collaborating with experts in the autonomous vehicle sector.
- Implementing and scaling backend systems for Waymo's ride-hailing services, which manage trip requests, provide APIs to client applications and partner services, calculate pickup and ride times, match vehicles to riders, and determine ride pricing.
- Working closely with cross-functional teams to design and implement the ride-hailing platform for various partners.
- Gaining expertise in and utilizing various Google technologies, including Borg, Spanner, Flume, and custom-built systems tailored to our specific challenges.
Qualifications:
You have:
- A BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in distributed systems and backend development.
- Proficiency in C++, or a strong willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of experience in distributed systems and backend development.
- 8+ years of experience programming in C++ and/or developing robust, efficient code.
- Experience in creating low-latency, large-scale, user-facing distributed systems.
Compensation:
