Position Overview:
As a vital member of our laboratory team, the Medical Laboratory Scientist I in the Blood Bank is accountable for executing a range of both routine and intricate technical procedures necessary for conducting laboratory tests. These tests yield critical data essential for the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in handling emergency protocols, including Massive Transfusion Protocols and Emergency Release, ensuring the safe issuance of uncrossmatched blood in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and issue compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, performing necessary visual and temperature checks on returned products. Ensure proper disposal of any improperly stored, labeled, or contaminated blood in compliance with approved procedures.
  • Maintain oversight of blood and blood product inventory to guarantee an adequate supply for patient transfusions. Initiate orders for blood products as needed and monitor the inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies, alerting supervisors when stock levels are low.
  • Participate in the training and mentorship of newly hired Medical Laboratory Scientists within the Blood Bank.
  • Execute routine and standardized tests as outlined in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures, including ABO/Rh testing, Antibody Screens, and compatibility tests, ensuring meticulous documentation.
  • Utilize specialized methods as specified in the Standard Operating Procedure and/or Technical Manual to resolve complex cases involving multiple antibodies or ABO discrepancies, completing all necessary documentation.
  • Conduct investigations and workups for transfusion reactions, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures for testing and documentation.
Qualifications:
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) with eligibility for ASCP certification. A copy of the degree must be provided, specifying MT or MLS.
  • If the degree does not specify MT or MLS, a transcript must be submitted. For foreign degrees, foreign equivalency documentation is required.
  • Preferred: A minimum of two years of experience in Blood Bank operations is advantageous. Strong critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently in high-pressure environments are essential.
