Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate proficiency in handling urgent scenarios, including Massive Transfusion Protocols and Emergency Release procedures, ensuring the safe issuance of uncrossmatched blood as per established laboratory protocols.
- Conduct thorough inspections and issue compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, performing visual and temperature assessments on returned blood. Properly dispose of any blood products that are improperly stored, labeled, punctured, outdated, contaminated, or hemolyzed in accordance with approved procedures.
- Oversee blood and blood product inventory to maintain sufficient supplies for patient transfusions. Initiate orders for blood and blood products as necessary, and monitor the inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies, alerting the Blood Bank Supervisor or Leads when stock levels are low.
- Engage in the training and mentorship of newly hired Medical Laboratory Scientists within the Blood Bank.
- Execute routine and standardized tests as outlined in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures, including ABO/Rh typing, Antibody Screening, Antibody Identification, Direct Antiglobulin tests, compatibility testing, phenotyping, and elution, ensuring accurate documentation.
- Implement specialized methods as specified in the Standard Operating Procedure and/or Technical Manual to address challenges such as multiple antibodies, ABO discrepancies, and Antibodies of Undetermined Specificity, completing all necessary documentation.
- Conduct investigations and evaluations of transfusion reactions, performing tests and documenting findings in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
Qualifications:
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) with ASCP eligibility. A copy of the BS diploma indicating MT or MLS must be provided. If not specified, a transcript is required.
- If the diploma is from a foreign institution, a foreign equivalency evaluation must be submitted.
- Strong critical thinking abilities, decisive judgment, and the capacity to work independently with minimal supervision in a high-pressure environment.
- A minimum of two years of experience in Blood Bank operations is preferred.
