Position Overview:
As a Medical Laboratory Scientist I within the Blood Bank department, you will be responsible for executing a range of routine and intricate technical procedures essential for conducting laboratory tests. These tests are crucial for diagnosing and treating various medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage emergency protocols effectively, including the Massive Transfusion Protocol and Emergency Release procedures, ensuring the safe issuance of uncrossmatched blood in accordance with established laboratory guidelines.
- Conduct thorough inspections and issue compatible blood and blood products for transfusions, performing necessary visual and temperature checks on returned blood products.
- Oversee blood and blood product inventory, ensuring an adequate supply for patient transfusions. Initiate orders for blood products as needed and monitor the inventory of reagents and other supplies, alerting supervisors when stock levels are low.
- Participate in the training and mentorship of newly hired Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Blood Bank.
- Perform routine and standardized tests as outlined in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures, including ABO/Rh testing, Antibody Screening, and compatibility testing, ensuring accurate documentation.
- Utilize specialized methods as specified in the Standard Operating Procedures to resolve complex cases involving multiple antibodies or ABO discrepancies, ensuring thorough documentation.
- Conduct investigations and document findings related to transfusion reactions in accordance with established protocols.
Qualifications:
Required: A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) with eligibility for ASCP certification. A copy of the degree must be provided, and if the degree does not specify MT or MLS, a transcript is required. For foreign degrees, foreign equivalency documentation must be submitted.
Preferred: Strong critical thinking abilities, decisive judgment, and the capacity to work independently in high-pressure situations. A minimum of two years of experience in Blood Bank operations is preferred.
