Classification: 9-month Instructional Faculty

Job Category: Instructional Faculty

Job Type: Full-Time

Location: Arlington, VA

Workplace Type: On Site Required

Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience

Criminal Background Check: Yes

About the Department:

Scalia Law has recently achieved a notable ranking in U.S. News, currently positioned at #28 among all law schools, #2 within the D.C. area, and #2 in Virginia. This accomplishment follows significant fundraising efforts, including a $30 million gift that honored the late Justice Antonin Scalia, and a bequest exceeding $50 million from the late Judge Allison M. Rouse and Mrs. Dorothy B. Rouse.

About the Position:

George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School is inviting applications for entry-level faculty roles set to commence in August 2025.

We are looking for applications from outstanding candidates across all legal disciplines who will thrive as educators and scholars, actively engaging in our vibrant intellectual community. We uphold a commitment to academic freedom, respectful discourse, and the exchange of diverse ideas. Our Statement of Faculty Principles reflects our dedication to Open Dialogue and Debate.

We seek exceptional faculty candidates whose diverse backgrounds and perspectives will enrich the Law School's intellectual environment and enhance the educational experience of our students. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The primary role of law faculty is to deliver effective instruction to Juris Doctor students, generate original scholarly works for publication, and provide service through participation in governance and operational activities within the Law School, the University, and the legal profession. In alignment with ABA law school accreditation standards, law faculty share responsibility with the dean for planning, implementing, and administering the legal education program; faculty selection, retention, promotion, and tenure; and educational policy formulation.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Prepare for classes, be available for student consultations, evaluate student performance, and stay current in subjects taught in accordance with ABA law school accreditation standards. Effective teaching necessitates a blend of course materials, defined learning outcomes, and thoughtful assignments designed to foster student learning.
  • Scholarship: Engage in research and scholarship through original contributions that advance the Law School's disciplines or integrate them with other fields, or apply them to legal policy and/or the legal profession. This includes publications, sponsored research, conference presentations, and other activities that enhance the Law School's scholarly reputation.
  • Service: Participate in service to the Law School and University community, contribute to governance, curricular development, and other institutional responsibilities as mandated by ABA law school accreditation standards; provide professional service, collaborate with judges and practicing attorneys to improve the profession, and engage in public service, including pro bono activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a relevant field; applicants must possess at least one of the following degrees: J.D., LL.M., J.S.D., S.J.D., Ph.D., or D.Phil;
  • Experience with legal scholarship, including published or in-progress scholarly works;
  • Demonstrated expertise and interest in one or more areas of law;
  • Exceptional research and writing skills;
  • Highly developed analytical abilities; and
  • Excellent verbal and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in higher education;
  • Prior clerkship and/or legal practice experience;
  • Experience in policy work;
  • Interdisciplinary scholarship experience; and
  • Knowledge of economics or the application of economic principles to law.

Instructions to Applicants:

For full consideration, applicants must apply for the Legal Studies Faculty Member position by completing the online application, which includes three professional references and a CV.

The Committee will begin reviewing applications and will continue until all positions are filled.

Posting Open Date: June 17, 2024

For Full Consideration, Apply by: July 2, 2024

Open Until Filled?: Yes
