Legal Advocacy Fellowship 2025
2 months ago
The Institute for Justice stands as the premier public-interest law firm dedicated to the principles of liberty, focusing on critical areas such as economic freedom, free expression, property rights, and educational opportunities. Our legal professionals engage in groundbreaking constitutional litigation, striving to eliminate governmental overreach in significant domains like civil asset forfeiture and qualified immunity, while advocating for individual liberties.
We are in search of our next cohort of Legal Advocacy Fellows to commence their journey with us. We seek enthusiastic and innovative legal practitioners with 0-3 years of professional experience to join our dynamic team. This Fellowship serves as the ideal pathway for recent law graduates or those who have completed clerkships and possess less than three years of legal practice. Successful completion of the Fellowship may lead to permanent employment opportunities.
Ideal candidates will exhibit exceptional writing and communication abilities, a strong desire to effectuate meaningful change, and a solid foundation in constitutional law, alongside a commitment to the mission of the Institute for Justice.
What to Expect as a Legal Advocacy Fellow?
Being a Legal Advocacy Fellow is immensely fulfilling. If you are driven to utilize your legal expertise to combat governmental overreach and advocate for individual rights, this is an unparalleled opportunity. As integral members of litigation teams, Fellows collaborate with seasoned attorneys to develop innovative and intellectually robust cases in both federal and state courts nationwide. Fellows engage directly with clients and are involved in all phases of the litigation process. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities for impactful work.
Beyond the courtroom, Fellows can engage in media writing, public speaking, grassroots advocacy, and direct engagement with policymakers. Throughout the Fellowship, participants will benefit from mentorship, specialized media training, and a supportive, collegial work environment.
What Qualities Does the Institute for Justice Seek in Legal Advocacy Fellows?
- Outstanding writing and communication skills;
- A commitment to creating tangible societal impact and a willingness to explore innovative strategies for winning complex cases;
- A passion for curtailing government power to empower individuals to shape their own futures;
- Judicial clerkship experience is preferred but not mandatory. The Institute offers tiered bonuses for candidates with clerkship experience in federal or state courts.
Application Process
To apply for the Legal Advocacy Fellowship, candidates should submit a resume, a cover letter, and a writing sample that showcases their best legal analysis, ideally limited to 10 pages. Subsequent stages of the interview process will include an additional writing assessment.
