Job Overview

General Overview:

The Packaging Operator plays a crucial role in fulfilling assigned production tasks to guarantee satisfaction for customers, team members, and suppliers. This position involves adhering to established operating protocols, as well as managing and resolving issues with production machinery. The Packaging Operator's responsibilities support the manufacturing of extended shelf life (ESL) dairy products.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Achieve set objectives in production, safety, quality, efficiency, and cost management.
  2. Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and sanitize all designated machinery following standard operating procedures.
  3. Resolve any production line interruptions and restore operations promptly.
  4. As needed, prepare, operate, and clean equipment such as bailers, trash compactors, and foamers, while completing all necessary documentation.
  5. Conduct ongoing product quality assessments.
  6. Alert team members to mechanical issues to enhance productivity and equipment performance, while identifying areas for operator assistance in resolving challenges.
  7. Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and corporate or plant policies, rules, and regulations.
  8. Assist and support various areas within the production facility as directed by supervisors, while beginning to develop skills in key production areas such as fillers, forklifts, and production lines.
  9. Gain proficiency in line circuits and ensure proper connections are established within the facility.
  10. Cover breaks and fulfill other staffing requirements as assigned by supervisors.
  11. Comply with all legal standards regarding dairy processing and safety during assigned shifts, reporting any concerns to supervisors.
  12. Maintain a safe working environment, promptly reporting safety issues to supervisors and taking corrective actions as necessary.
  13. Report food safety concerns and take appropriate actions, supporting Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards by maintaining food safety and quality.
  14. Ensure cleanliness in work areas and strictly follow sanitation protocols.
  15. Facilitate effective communication between shifts and departments.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Ability to apply basic to advanced mathematical concepts for job-related tasks.
  2. Respond appropriately to inquiries from employees, vendors, and customers.
  3. Read, write, and communicate effectively in English to perform job functions (additional language skills may be preferred based on business needs).
  4. Understand the company's mission, objectives, and individual contributions to achieving them.
  5. Operate facility equipment as required in the assigned area.
  6. Complete all required company training successfully.
  7. Interpret company documents and UPC/code information accurately.

Education and Experience:

  1. Preferred: GED or High School Diploma.
  2. Preferred: Previous experience in manufacturing or machine operation.

Performance Expectations:

  1. Report to work punctually and communicate any tardiness or absences to the assigned Supervisor/Manager in advance.
  2. Arrive at work in a condition suitable for performing job duties.
  3. Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to business and position-appropriate attire, including compliance with GMP dress code standards.
  4. Follow performance criteria and standards of conduct as outlined in company policies and procedures.
  5. Ensure a safe working environment and immediately report safety concerns, taking appropriate corrective actions.
  6. Complete all assigned tasks and responsibilities as directed.

Work Schedule:

  1. Availability for morning, afternoon, and overnight shifts any day of the week is required.
  2. Requests for time off must be communicated in advance and approved by the Supervisor/Manager.
  3. Hourly positions typically involve 36-48 hours per week (12-hour shifts), with additional hours possible based on business needs.

Environmental Considerations:

  1. Work conditions are generally protected from weather, though temperature fluctuations may occur.
  2. Potential exposure to food product ingredients, including allergens.
  3. Possible exposure to chemicals used in food manufacturing and sanitation processes.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to navigate all areas of the facility, including office, production, and warehouse environments.
  2. Must wear all necessary personal protective equipment to perform job functions.
  3. Capable of standing and/or sitting continuously for a full shift, including meal breaks.
  4. Physically able to lift, push, pull, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance, and objects exceeding 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  5. Visual acuity must be sufficient to perform job functions.

The compensation range for this position reflects various factors, including skills, experience, training, and organizational needs. Typically, individuals are not hired at or near the top of the range, and compensation decisions are made based on the specific circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current wage range is $20.50 to $27.00.
