Job Overview

General Overview:

The Packaging Operator plays a crucial role in fulfilling designated production tasks to guarantee satisfaction for customers, team members, and suppliers. This position involves executing all necessary operational protocols and managing production machinery effectively, including troubleshooting when issues arise. The Packaging Operator contributes to the production of extended shelf life (ESL) dairy products.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Achieve production targets while maintaining safety, quality, performance, and cost efficiency.
  2. Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and clean all designated machinery in line with established operating procedures.
  3. Resolve any production line disruptions promptly to maintain workflow.
  4. As needed, prepare, operate, and sanitize equipment such as bailers, trash compactors, and foamers, ensuring all documentation is completed.
  5. Conduct ongoing quality control assessments of products.
  6. Alert team members to mechanical issues to enhance productivity and equipment performance, and identify opportunities for operator involvement in problem-solving.
  7. Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and all relevant corporate and plant policies.
  8. Assist various departments within the production facility as directed by supervisors and begin training in critical operational areas such as fillers and forklifts.
  9. Develop understanding of line circuits and ensure proper connections are established in the facility.
  10. Provide coverage for breaks and other staffing requirements as assigned.
  11. Comply with all legal standards regarding dairy processing and safety, reporting any concerns to supervisors.
  12. Maintain a safe working environment by promptly reporting safety issues and taking corrective actions as necessary.
  13. Identify and report food safety concerns, supporting Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards by upholding food safety and quality.
  14. Ensure cleanliness in work areas and strictly follow sanitation protocols.
  15. Facilitate effective communication between shifts and across departments.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Ability to apply basic to advanced mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as knowledge of weights and measures.
  2. Respond appropriately to inquiries from employees, vendors, and customers.
  3. Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English to perform job functions effectively.
  4. Understanding of the company's mission, objectives, and individual contributions towards achieving them.
  5. Capability to operate facility equipment as required in the assigned area.
  6. Completion of all company training requirements.
  7. Ability to interpret company documents and UPC/code information.

Education and Experience:

  1. Preferred: GED or High School Diploma.
  2. Preferred: Previous experience in manufacturing or machine operation.

Performance Expectations:

  1. Report to work punctually and communicate any tardiness or absences to the assigned Supervisor/Manager in advance.
  2. Arrive at work in a condition suitable for performing job duties.
  3. Maintain professional appearance and adhere to the GMP dress code at all times.
  4. Comply with performance standards and conduct as outlined in company policies and the employee handbook.
  5. Ensure a safe work environment and take immediate action to address safety concerns.
  6. Complete all assigned tasks and responsibilities diligently.

Work Schedule:

  1. Availability for morning, afternoon, and overnight shifts any day of the week is required.
  2. Requests for time off must be communicated in advance and approved by the Supervisor/Manager.
  3. Typically scheduled for 36-48 hours per week (12-hour shifts), with potential for additional hours based on business needs.

Environmental Considerations:

  1. Work is generally protected from weather conditions, though temperature fluctuations may occur.
  2. Exposure to ingredients used in food production, including allergens, may be present.
  3. Potential exposure to chemicals used in food processing and sanitation.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to navigate all areas of the facility, including office, production, and warehouse environments.
  2. Must wear all necessary personal protective equipment to perform job functions.
  3. Capable of standing or sitting for extended periods during shifts, with scheduled meal breaks.
  4. Physically able to lift, push, pull, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance; heavier items may require reasonable accommodations.
  5. Visual acuity must be sufficient to perform job functions effectively.

The compensation range for this position reflects various factors, including skills, experience, training, and organizational needs. Typically, new hires are not brought in at the top of the pay scale, and compensation decisions are made based on individual circumstances. The estimated wage range is $20.50 to $27.00.
