Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Speech Language Pathologist to join our team at Advocate Health. As a key member of our clinical staff, you will be responsible for providing diagnostic evaluations, treatment plans, and patient care coordination services to individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnostic Evaluations
    • Conduct thorough and timely diagnostic evaluations to identify communication and swallowing disorders.
    • Collect and analyze patient historical information, including medical history, communication patterns, and swallowing habits.
    • Select and administer appropriate test instruments to assess speech, language, cognition, voice, articulation, and bedside swallowing.
  • Treatment Planning
    • Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnostic evaluations, patient goals, and medical needs.
    • Provide treatment consistent with patient skills and modify treatment as needed to attain goals.
    • Develop measurable short-term goals and revise them as patient progresses through treatment.
  • Patient Care Coordination
    • Communicate patient-related information to nursing and other healthcare providers to facilitate continuity of care.
    • Prepare and maintain patient reports, progress notes, and related records in a thorough, organized, accurate, and timely manner.
    • Document patient information according to guidelines set by accrediting organizations, such as CARF and ASHA.
  • Education and Training
    • Provide education and training to patients and families regarding communication and swallowing disorders, treatment programs, and safety precautions.
    • Assess patient/family knowledge and understanding to determine the level of teaching needed.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching programs and make adjustments as needed.
  • Professional Development
    • Participate in ongoing professional development, including in-services, conferences, and continuing education events.
    • Stay current with changes in rehabilitative services, managed care, and healthcare policies.
    • Share knowledge and best practices with peers and contribute to the development of clinical policies and procedures.
  • Quality Assurance and Safety
    • Participate in quality assurance and safety programs to ensure patient safety and quality care.
    • Report patient safety events and near misses in a timely manner.
    • Adhere to all behavioral and procedural patient safety practices.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Masters degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited institution.
  • Experience
    • 1-2 years of experience in speech-language pathology, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Licensure
    • Current licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist in the state of practice.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
Working Conditions

This position requires travel to off-campus locations, which may involve exposure to weather and road conditions. The ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance is required. Patient handling equipment is expected to be used when lifting patients over 35 pounds or when patients are unable to assist with the lift.
