Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Speech Language Pathologist to join our team at Advocate Health. As a key member of our clinical staff, you will be responsible for providing diagnostic evaluations, treatment plans, and patient care coordination services to patients with communication and swallowing disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnostic Evaluations
    • Conduct thorough and timely diagnostic evaluations to identify communication and swallowing disorders.
    • Collect and analyze patient historical information, including medical history, speech and language patterns, and cognitive function.
    • Select and administer appropriate test instruments to assess speech, language, cognition, voice, articulation, and bedside swallowing.
  • Treatment Planning
    • Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnostic evaluations, patient goals, and medical history.
    • Provide treatment consistent with patient skills and modify treatment as needed to attain goals.
    • Develop measurable short-term goals and revise them as patient progresses through treatment.
  • Patient Care Coordination
    • Communicate patient-related information to nursing and other healthcare providers to facilitate continuity of care.
    • Prepare and maintain patient reports, progress notes, and related records in a thorough, organized, accurate, and timely manner.
    • Document patient information according to guidelines set by accrediting organizations, such as CARF and ASHA.
  • Education and Training
    • Provide education and training to patients and families regarding communication and swallowing disorders, treatment programs, and safety precautions.
    • Assess patient/family knowledge and understanding to determine the level of teaching needed.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching programs and make adjustments as needed.
  • Professional Development
    • Participate in ongoing professional development, including in-services, conferences, and continuing education events.
    • Stay current with changes in rehabilitative services and Advocate Health policies and procedures.
    • Share knowledge and best practices with peers.
  • Quality Assurance and Safety
    • Participate in quality assurance and safety programs, including data collection and process improvement initiatives.
    • Evaluate environmental safety and provide a safe environment for patients based on age and development status.
    • Follow hospital infection control and safety protocols.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Masters degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited institution.
  • Experience
    • 1-2 years of experience in speech-language pathology, preferably in a hospital or rehabilitative setting.
  • Licensure
    • Current licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when the patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
