POSITION TITLE: Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Clinical Services REPORTS TO: Clinical Director

OBJECTIVE:

The primary aim of the Therapeutic Recreation process is to enhance or sustain physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being, thereby enabling individuals to engage fully in life.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Gather information from various sources, including medical records, healthcare professionals, family members, and patients, to evaluate individual capabilities, needs, and interests.
  2. Design, organize, lead, and participate in therapeutic programs and activities aimed at facilitating patient recovery.
  3. Develop and execute expressive therapy, leisure, and social activities tailored to meet the specific needs of patients.
  4. Conduct sessions aimed at enhancing mental and physical health, instructing patients in various activities such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation techniques.
  5. Evaluate patient needs through observation, medical documentation, assessments, and discussions with healthcare team members and families.
  6. Create individualized treatment plans and programs that align with patient interests and requirements.
  7. Implement strategies to prevent potential harm to patients.
  8. Engage patients in therapeutic services and recreational activities utilizing diverse techniques, including arts and crafts, animal-assisted therapy, sports, games, dance, drama, and music.
  9. Provide interventions focused on improving and maintaining the physical, mental, and emotional health of clients, aiming to alleviate symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety.

  • Utilizes clear and appropriate language tailored to the specific context.
  • Exhibits exemplary customer service when interacting with patients, colleagues, and visitors.
  • Conveys patient information accurately, concisely, and confidentially.
  • Employs available resources to address communication needs effectively.
  • Ensures timely and accurate information dissemination throughout the organization.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with other departments.

Professional Conduct:

  • Complies with departmental and organizational standards of conduct.
  • Prioritizes the needs of patients and their families.
  • Avoids discussing personal matters in the presence of patients.
  • Takes responsibility for actions and behaviors; welcomes constructive feedback positively.
  • Engages in opportunities for professional development and growth.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Undertake other duties and tasks as assigned. This role may require availability on weekends.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy is required. Previous experience in a healthcare recreation setting is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or currently pursuing national certification is required. First Aid, CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certifications are mandatory (training provided upon hire).
