THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SPECIALIST

JOB OVERVIEW

DEPARTMENT: Clinical REPORTS TO: Clinical Director

OBJECTIVE:

The aim of the Therapeutic Recreation process is to enhance or sustain physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being to enable comprehensive engagement in life.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Gather data from medical documentation, healthcare personnel, family members, or patients to evaluate patient capabilities, requirements, and interests.

- Design, coordinate, lead, and partake in rehabilitation programs and activities to support patient recovery.

- Develop and execute expressive therapy, leisure, and social activities tailored to meet patient needs.

- Conduct sessions aimed at enhancing patients' mental and physical health, guiding them in activities and techniques such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation strategies tailored to their specific requirements.

- Evaluate patient needs through observations, medical records, assessments, and discussions with other healthcare professionals, patient families, and the patients themselves.

- Formulate treatment plans and programs that align with patient interests and needs.

- Implement interventions to safeguard patients from harm.

- Engage patients in therapeutic services and recreational activities utilizing various techniques including arts and crafts, animal-assisted therapy, sports, games, dance, drama, and music.

- Provide interventions focused on enhancing and maintaining the physical, mental, and emotional health of clients by aiming to alleviate depression, stress, and anxiety.

Communication Skills:
  • Utilizes clear and appropriate language for the context.
  • Exhibits customer service behaviors in interactions with patients, team members, and visitors.
  • Communicates patient information accurately, concisely, and confidentially.
  • Employs available resources to support communication needs.
  • Ensures timely and effective communication of accurate information throughout the organization.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with other departments.
Professional Conduct:
  • Complies with departmental and organizational standards.
  • Prioritizes the needs of patients and their families.
  • Avoids discussing personal matters or grievances in the presence of patients.
  • Takes responsibility for actions and behaviors; welcomes constructive feedback positively.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

- Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

- Availability for weekend shifts may be required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

- A Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy is mandatory. Previous experience in recreational activities within a healthcare environment is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:

- Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or currently pursuing national certification.

- First Aid, CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certifications are required (training provided upon hire).
