Role Overview:
The Lead Underwriter is tasked with evaluating new and existing loans within a portfolio that primarily includes Commercial Real Estate (CRE), Commercial & Industrial credit lines, term loans, as well as multifamily and mixed-use financing, including loans for non-profit organizations and houses of worship. The Underwriter plays a crucial role in the Bank's asset growth by (i) assessing credit risk (ii) evaluating current credit quality and assigning appropriate risk ratings (iii) participating in client meetings or discussions with the lending team to evaluate borrower creditworthiness.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate strong underwriting skills and effectively communicate credit-related issues.
  • Independently analyze complex credit matters and assess associated risks.
  • Exhibit proficiency in reviewing financial statements and evaluating overall credit quality.
  • Examine financial documents, including tax returns, rent rolls, and cash flow forecasts.
  • Underwrite loan extensions and renewal requests as necessary.
  • Conduct site assessments as required and prepare reports in accordance with lending protocols.
  • Assist in the annual review process of existing loans as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to underwrite and monitor commercial and industrial loans, lines of credit, term loans, as well as owner-occupied mortgages, multifamily and mixed-use loans, small business loans, and non-profit loans.
  • Comprehensive understanding of credit quality and credit analysis.
  • Skilled in analyzing financial statements for commercial real estate, multifamily properties, and business operations.
  • Ability to engage with borrowers, attorneys, accountants, appraisers, and other external professionals as necessary.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with relationship management and business development capabilities, working with both private-sector financial institutions and public agencies.
Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in underwriting and analyzing commercial real estate and business loans.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in proposing, negotiating, and recommending credit and covenant structures.
  • Experience in financial statement analysis using Excel or similar software.
  • Well-developed analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with banking products and services.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • SBA underwriting experience is preferred but not mandatory.
