Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver prescribed external beam radiation therapy treatments under the guidance of the oncologist and oversight of the department manager. This position allows for independent judgment, utilizing creativity and initiative. It is essential to demonstrate courteous, polite, and respectful interactions with patients, physicians, and staff, fostering positive perceptions of the Bon Secours Cancer Institute and its personnel.

Employment Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited radiation oncology program.
  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy, or board eligible (expected to pass ARRT certification exam within 3 months of hire).
  • ARRT certification must be maintained throughout employment by completing required continuing education.
  • Proficiency in performing complex technical tasks typically acquired through clinical experience.
  • Maintain state licensure as mandated by the Department of Health.
Essential Job Functions

Daily Operations
  • Operates various radiation therapy equipment, ensuring safety standards are met. Reports any malfunctions or necessary adjustments immediately. Initiates repair processes as needed.
  • Accurately interprets physician prescriptions, diagnoses, and treatment charts. For initial treatments, verifies setup and accuracy using the treatment plan record.
  • Conducts a documented time-out before each treatment to confirm patient identification through two sources.
  • Maintains constant visual and auditory communication with patients during treatments.
  • Performs daily warm-ups and quality assurance on linear accelerators and CT simulators, keeping precise records of machine readings and faults. Reports any malfunctions immediately.
  • Ensures treatment rooms are properly set up and ready for patient procedures to optimize patient flow.
  • Maintains cleanliness of treatment areas in accordance with infection prevention policies and ensures rooms are stocked with necessary supplies. Ensures control rooms are organized and free of clutter.
  • Explains treatment processes and scheduled procedures to patients, establishing effective communication.
  • Reinforces guidance and instructions provided to patients and their families during treatments as directed by the Radiation Oncologist or nursing staff.
  • Organizes and accurately schedules daily treatments, CT simulations, and other necessary procedures, accommodating patient time constraints and travel issues.
  • Handles patients and their families with a high degree of professionalism, care, and respect. Exhibits confidence to alleviate patient concerns related to treatment and radiation oncology procedures.
  • Adheres to infection prevention policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the on-call process as per departmental policies.
Documentation and Billing
  • Locates or obtains necessary consent forms for treatment and student participation.
  • Maintains accurate department and hospital records on patients in line with established standards.
  • Follows policies for end-of-treatment visits and new patient starts.
  • Ensures prior authorization is obtained and billing is approved before initiating treatment. Bills patients accurately based on the procedures performed.
  • Completes necessary documentation for treatments, simulations, and procedures to validate billing and ensure treatment accuracy.
  • Regularly reviews charts to ensure accuracy and completeness of records.
Treatment and Procedures
  • Administers prescribed external beam radiation therapy treatments.
  • Monitors patients daily for reactions and complications related to treatments.
  • Maintains awareness of patients' physical and emotional conditions, recognizing and reporting adverse signs, and taking necessary actions.
  • Obtains and evaluates patients' treatment field localization procedures as directed by physician prescriptions and departmental policies. Implements necessary changes per physician recommendations.
  • Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross-contamination of infectious diseases when appropriate.
  • Reviews all required information in electronic medical records for simulations, including but not limited to treatment plans and physician consultations.
  • Ensures that all items requested in the physician's treatment plan are available prior to the procedure.
  • Communicates with all relevant staff required for the procedure, including physics, nursing, and physicians, before commencing the appointment.
  • Accurately prepares patient treatment setup instructions.
  • Fabricates immobilization devices as necessary.
  • Completes all documentation promptly.
