Core Responsibilities
The primary duty of this role is to deliver prescribed external beam radiation therapy treatments under the guidance of the oncologist and oversight of the department manager. This position allows for independent judgment, utilizing creativity and initiative.
Professional Qualifications
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
+ Graduate from an accredited radiation oncology program.
+ Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy, or board eligible (expected to achieve ARRT certification within 3 months of employment).
+ ARRT certification must be maintained throughout employment by completing required continuing education.
+ Proficiency in performing complex technical tasks typically acquired through clinical experience.
+ Maintain state licensure as mandated by the Department of Health.
Key Duties
Daily Operations
- Operate various radiation therapy equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or necessary adjustments immediately.
- Accurately interpret physician prescriptions, diagnoses, and treatment charts.
- Verify treatment setups using the treatment plan record for initial treatments.
- Conduct a documented time-out before each treatment to confirm patient identity using two sources.
- Maintain constant communication with patients during treatments.
- Perform daily warm-ups and quality assurance checks on linear accelerators and CT simulators, keeping precise records of machine readings and faults.
- Ensure treatment rooms are correctly set up and ready for patient procedures to optimize patient flow.
- Maintain cleanliness of treatment areas according to infection prevention policies and ensure all necessary supplies are available.
- Explain treatment processes and scheduled procedures to patients, fostering effective communication.
- Reinforce instructions provided to patients and their families as directed by the Radiation Oncologist or nursing staff.
- Organize and accurately schedule daily treatments, CT simulations, and other procedures, accommodating patient needs.
- Handle patient interactions with professionalism, care, and respect, ensuring safety and comfort.
- Participate in the on-call rotation as per departmental policies.
Documentation and Billing
- Obtain necessary consent forms for treatments and student participation.
- Maintain accurate department and hospital records for patients in line with established standards.
- Ensure prior authorization is secured and billing is approved before commencing treatment.
- Accurately bill patients based on procedures performed and complete all required documentation for treatment validation.
Treatment Administration
- Administer prescribed external beam radiation therapy treatments.
- Monitor patients daily for reactions and complications related to treatments.
- Recognize and report any adverse signs, taking appropriate action as needed.
- Evaluate patients' treatment field localization procedures as directed by physician prescriptions.
- Implement necessary adjustments based on physician recommendations.
- Adhere to sterile techniques to prevent cross-contamination of infectious diseases when applicable.
- Review all pertinent information in the electronic medical record (EMR) for simulations and ensure availability of required items prior to appointments.
- Communicate with relevant staff, including physics, nursing, and physicians, before initiating procedures.
- Prepare patient treatment setup instructions accurately and fabricate immobilization devices as necessary.
- Complete all documentation promptly.
