The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our esteemed Department of Chemistry. This role will involve collaboration within a dynamic research team focused on innovative approaches to understanding bacterial cell wall dynamics.


The research group has made significant strides in exploring the substrate versatility of cell wall biosynthetic enzymes. Our aim is to develop groundbreaking methodologies to attach haptens to bacterial surfaces, thereby harnessing the body's immune response to combat bacterial infections.

Future projects will focus on creating a new class of cell wall probes designed to uncover essential aspects of cell wall sensing and remodeling processes in live bacterial cells. This research is pivotal in advancing our understanding of how bacterial cell walls interact with the human immune system and the implications of structural modifications on antibiotic resistance.

The successful candidate will engage in the design and synthesis of small molecules, peptides, or proteins that effectively label live bacterial cells. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Protein expression and purification from bacterial sources.
  • Modification of proteins through bioconjugation techniques.
  • Synthesis of peptides in both solution and solid phases.
  • Development and optimization of bacterial cell-based assays.
  • Investigation of biologically relevant targets and mechanisms of action.
  • Conducting flow cytometry analyses and confocal microscopy.

Postdoctoral Researchers will have the opportunity to publish their findings in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals and will be recognized as co-inventors on patents arising from their research efforts.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field is required by the start date of the appointment. Candidates should also possess relevant skills and experience that will enhance the selection process.
