Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Charlottesville, Virginia, United States Commonwealth of Virginia Full time
Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated postdoctoral research scientist to oversee research initiatives, mentor junior researchers, and contribute to a vibrant laboratory atmosphere. Our focus is on addressing biological inquiries through a multifaceted approach, utilizing premier genetic models such as mice and zebrafish, advanced imaging methodologies (including lightsheet and micro-CT), and comprehensive genomic analyses (bulk RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, among others), alongside classical biochemical techniques to tackle significant challenges in cardiovascular development and related diseases.

Key Responsibilities
In this stimulating position, you will be a proactive and organized individual with strong capabilities in problem-solving, hypothesis formulation and testing, scientific writing, and communication. Experience with standard molecular and genetic techniques related to model organisms (such as mice, zebrafish, flies, or yeast) is essential. Candidates with foundational biochemistry skills and cell culture experience are also encouraged to apply. Familiarity with bioinformatics is advantageous but not mandatory. Our research aims to explore not only the transcriptional regulation of cardiovascular differentiation and development but also the interplay of cell signaling pathways in vascular-related diseases.

Collaborative Environment
You will thrive in a high-energy, collaborative setting, ensuring a seamless workflow, directing specific research projects, and managing team members as necessary. Your contributions will be vital in achieving the group's objectives of deciphering the genetic and molecular mechanisms that underpin a functional cardiovascular system. We value your enthusiasm, expertise, and diligence by providing opportunities to present your findings at national and international conferences, as well as local seminars. These meetings serve as excellent platforms for professional networking, and we will facilitate these opportunities annually, contingent upon securing additional funding.

Professional Development
Trainees will be expected to develop figures, prepare presentations and manuscripts, and submit proposals for training grants to secure both internal and external funding. We are committed to dedicating time for formal coursework to broaden your knowledge base and will provide rigorous mentoring and training in scientific presentation and writing skills. We actively support any career trajectory (academic, industry, education) that aligns with your aspirations. This role offers competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and an exceptional research environment.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Doctoral degree

Preferred Skills
  • Proficiency in genetics, including techniques such as cre/lox technology, CRISPR/Cas9, and transgenics.

Physical Requirements
This position primarily involves sedentary work with extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel may be required for meetings and programs.

Application Process
Interested candidates should apply through the designated application platform and submit the following documents:
  • A CV/resume
  • A cover letter
  • Contact information for three references (name, email, phone number)
All documents should be uploaded into the resume submission field, and multiple documents can be combined into this single field. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to fostering a diverse workforce. We believe that diversity enhances excellence through the unique perspectives and experiences of every individual. We are equal opportunity employers, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender identity or expression, marital status, national or ethnic origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, veteran status, and family medical or genetic information.
