Veteran Support Specialist

Full Time | Day Shift

**Compensation starting at $21.20/hour; commensurate with experience**

Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio is currently in search of a Veteran Support Specialist to assist individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly veterans, with dignity and compassion.

Key Responsibilities of the Veteran Support Specialist:
  • Collaborate with community and governmental organizations (social services, shelters, faith-based groups, correctional facilities, VA services, legal aid, landlords, etc.) to identify low-income veteran families at risk of homelessness.
  • Utilize appropriate assessment tools to evaluate eligibility, prioritize families in urgent need, and determine if alternative interventions may be more beneficial.
  • Conduct intake assessments for new participants, including needs evaluations and health screenings.
  • Guide ineligible families to other community resources or VA support.
  • Work closely with clients to formulate and execute personalized, action-oriented plans focused on achieving housing stability.
  • Establish planning frameworks that reflect client strengths, responsibilities, and actionable steps toward goal attainment.
  • Provide budgeting assistance and planning support aimed at housing retention.
  • Coordinate with VA services, veteran programs, and community resources to help clients secure income and employment.
  • Connect clients to internal resources for financial assistance as needed.
  • Refer clients to partner organizations and community resources that align with their goals.
  • Maintain close collaboration with all staff members and public assistance agencies to ensure comprehensive support for clients.
  • Research and compile information on available community resources, fostering relationships for ongoing client support.
  • Maintain accurate records and case notes, ensuring timely submission of reports and documentation of client interactions.
  • Engage in weekly case reviews, collaborating with colleagues to enhance client outcomes.
  • Support clients in maintaining ongoing relationships with community resources and their support networks.
  • Complete training in Critical Time Intervention.
  • Foster an environment of safety, dignity, and support through adherence to ethical standards and confidentiality agreements.
  • Assist in crisis intervention and de-escalation, modeling professional problem-solving behavior.
Qualifications for the Veteran Support Specialist:
  • A four-year degree in Social Work or a related field, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Licensure as a Social Worker is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience working with homeless populations is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.
