Position Overview

The Lead Educator plays a pivotal role within the Marine Conservation Programs team, spearheading the development of captivating educational initiatives designed to motivate audiences towards ocean conservation efforts. This position entails the creation of innovative programs, from initial concept to execution, utilizing the organization's exhibits, scientific research, and various resources.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Directs the formulation of educational programming and conservation content that aligns with the organization's mission, ensuring both in-person and virtual offerings achieve targeted outcomes. Employs contemporary methodologies in educational theory, science communication, and audience engagement to disseminate the Aquarium's extensive knowledge and advocacy efforts.
  2. Acts as a subject matter expert in educational practices and science communication. Guides and trains cross-departmental teams on effective strategies for conveying complex conservation themes to diverse audiences, including visitors, members, and stakeholders.
  3. Delivers mission-driven educational programs to the public, collaborating closely with various departments to highlight the Aquarium's comprehensive initiatives. Enhances public awareness of conservation issues and connects individuals with advocacy resources and community engagement opportunities.
  4. Participates in cross-departmental working groups and organizational projects, fostering collaboration among teams including Animal Care, Marketing, and Visitor Experience.
  5. Mentors and trains educators (staff, volunteers, interns) to uphold the highest standards of educational delivery. Provides constructive feedback on communication techniques and conservation messaging.
  6. Ensures consistency in messaging across the organization's educational and marketing platforms, maintaining open communication with educators and delivering timely updates.
  7. Contributes to the recruitment process for Marine Conservation staff.
  8. Represents the organization in a leadership capacity to external groups and institutions regarding conservation programming.
  9. Undertakes additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in marine science, environmental education, museum studies, or a related discipline; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • 3-4 years of experience in educational programming or interpretation within an aquarium or museum context, with 2-3 years in a supervisory or mentoring role.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient knowledge in exhibit interpretation, educational methodologies, marine biology, or ecology.
  • Exceptional skills in engaging diverse audiences and effectively teaching complex topics related to marine conservation.
  • Strong commitment to collaborative teamwork focused on mission-driven educational programming.
  • Excellent communication abilities, both verbal and written, with diverse groups including visitors, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Proven mentoring and coaching capabilities, with a talent for motivating interns and volunteers.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment, embrace new ideas, and solve problems collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, demonstrating professionalism and the ability to manage pressure with tact.
  • Willingness to undergo training for animal handling and to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Comfortable guiding groups and individuals during special events and in unique situations.
