Position Overview

The Lead Conservation Educator plays a pivotal role within the Conservation Learning team, spearheading the development of captivating educational programs designed to motivate audiences towards ocean conservation initiatives. This position entails crafting engaging content from initial concept to final execution, utilizing the Aquarium's exhibits, scientific research, and various resources.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Directs the creation of educational programming and conservation content that aligns with the organization's conservation objectives, ensuring both on-site and virtual offerings achieve desired outcomes. Employs contemporary methods in interpretive theory, science communication, and audience engagement to convey the Aquarium's extensive expertise and advocacy efforts.
  2. Acts as a subject matter expert in interpretation and science communication, providing facilitation, coaching, and training to other departments and cross-functional teams on effective communication strategies for complex conservation issues.
  3. Delivers mission-driven programs to the public, both in-person and online, collaborating closely with various departments to highlight all facets of the Aquarium's initiatives. Enhances public understanding of conservation topics and connects them with advocacy tools and community engagement opportunities.
  4. Leads and participates in cross-departmental working groups and organizational projects, fostering collaboration among teams such as Animal Care, Marketing, and Visitor Experience.
  5. Mentors and trains educators (staff, volunteers, interns) to uphold the highest standards of mission-driven interpretation, offering guidance on communication techniques and conservation messaging.
  6. Ensures consistent messaging across the main building interpretation and the organization's marketing and community engagement efforts, maintaining open communication with educators.
  7. Participates in the recruitment process for Conservation Learning staff, serving as a resource for the team.
  8. Represents the Aquarium in a leadership capacity to external groups and institutions regarding conservation programming.
  9. Performs additional duties as assigned related to the position.

Qualifications

Essential Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in marine science, environmental science, education, museum studies, or a related discipline; a Master's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • 3-4 years of interpretive experience and/or program development in an aquarium or museum context, with 2-3 years of supervisory and mentoring experience required.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient knowledge in areas such as exhibit interpretation, educational theory, human development, marine biology, and/or ecology.
  • Exceptional interpretation skills for diverse audiences, with the ability to effectively teach topics related to aquarium exhibits and conservation.
  • Demonstrated passion for collaborative efforts in developing mission-driven programming focused on conservation and research.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven effectiveness in oral and written communication with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent mentoring and coaching abilities, capable of motivating others and leading teams.
  • Ability to maintain a positive demeanor and sense of humor while adapting to a dynamic work environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, capable of exercising sound judgment under pressure.
  • Willingness to undergo training for animal handling in educational programs and to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Comfortable guiding groups and individuals during special events and in unique situations.
