Overview
The Transportation Operations Supervisor plays a crucial role in overseeing the transportation support personnel, which may encompass customer service representatives, load planners, administrative staff, and various driver types including Local, OTR (Over the Road), Mobile Lab, and Team drivers.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily operations, including driver management, route assignments, and handling shipment requests from clients.
- Ensure equipment maintenance and manage the preventive maintenance and repair programs.
- Oversee invoice reconciliation and scheduling tasks.
- Some supervisors may have oversight of P&L budgets and assist with vendor management and shuttle coordination.
- Foster a safety-oriented culture by implementing corporate best practices related to safety and security.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and conduct accident investigations using fleet safety programs.
- Maintain accurate records in line with state and federal regulations, including DOT reporting and licensing documentation.
- Facilitate effective communication across all operational areas to meet customer demands and ensure timely dispatch of loads.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to team members to help them achieve performance objectives.
- Administer the SmartDrive program for video-based safety reviews and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Gather and analyze key performance metrics to enhance fleet operational efficiency.
- Manage associate schedules to guarantee complete departmental coverage.
- Communicate customer service requirements to the outbound team.
- Ensure comprehensive training for drivers on all aspects of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports and make staffing recommendations as needed.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience is required. A minimum of two years of experience in fleet dispatch or related training is necessary. Knowledge of load planning and DOT compliance regulations is essential. A background in customer service, operations, or industrial settings is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to manage multiple tasks.
- Experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Transportation Management Systems is advantageous.
