Overview of Responsibilities:


The Infection Control Specialist acts as a vital resource and consultant to facilitate the execution of Infection Control initiatives across the facility.

This role aims to enhance health care outcomes in alignment with the policies, procedures, philosophy, objectives, and mission of West Suburban Medical Center.

Collaborating with Medical Staff departments and all hospital sectors, the Infection Control Specialist ensures that Infection Control practices align with hospital goals by disseminating information to various centers, departments, and units.


This position integrates the essential elements of human care and executes established protocols in accordance with the organization's and nursing division's policies, procedures, and standards of care.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Performance and Care:
Designs and executes strategies to guarantee the implementation of Infection Control practices, achieving desired health outcomes. Reviews and interprets Infection Control data using established benchmarks.


Works collaboratively with departments, including medicine, nursing, and clinical support, by: (1) identifying; (2) assessing; and (3) analyzing trends that influence quality patient care, outcomes, and resource utilization.

Engages with all departments regarding Infection Control principles by:

Providing both formal and informal training

Assisting in the development, revision, and review of area-specific guidelines and/or policies and procedures

Participating in hospital committees

Acts as a liaison to Employee Health to identify significant exposures; gathers information and analyzes data for trends. Collaborates with Employee Health to identify areas for improvement

Documents and investigates infections and communicable diseases in accordance with established policies and external agency requirements

Prepares Infection Control data analyses for the Infection Control Committee

Commitment to Service Excellence:


Prepares staff for external regulatory agency evaluations by aiding in the interpretation of regulatory standards, compliance, and the integration of infection control principles.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of external regulatory agency standards and regulations for Infection Control

Serves as a resource for staff and the organization

Supports staff in adhering to external regulatory agency infection control mandates.

Demonstrates the ability and willingness to work within a high-performance team.

Takes responsibility for personal work outcomes.

Engages in problem-solving; develops productivity and quality standards; drafts policies and procedures; manages resources efficiently; educates, evaluates, and maintains records.

Fosters effective working relationships across all areas of responsibility within the organization.

Assists in the creation, preparation, execution, and monitoring of budget items related to Infection Control.

Demonstrates a cost-effective approach regarding equipment, supplies, and all other resources.

Ensures data security and maintains confidentiality of information in line with departmental and organizational guidelines.

Participates in selected organizational and medical staff committees, workgroups, and task forces as appropriate.

Engages in performance improvement initiatives.

Stays informed about changes and advancements in the healthcare delivery system and regulatory agencies. Evaluates and updates related initiatives and implements revisions as necessary.


Represents the organization by engaging in professional organizations, continuing education, external workshops, seminars, and meetings related to Infection Control.

Takes charge of professional development by attending educational opportunities.

Conducts self-performance evaluations, identifying strengths and areas for professional growth.
