Role Overview:

Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is in search of a Machinist 4. This role is situated in Roy, UT and plays a crucial part in the Sentinel program.

Key Responsibilities:

This position entails machining components according to specifications by configuring and operating CNC machinery. The Machinist is accountable for:

  • Ensuring product quality through in-process and final inspections.
  • Maintaining and caring for equipment.
  • Ensuring readiness of tooling and materials.
  • Upholding a clean and safe working environment.

The individual will also be expected to train others in all facets of CNC equipment setup, operation, and maintenance. Responsibilities include:

  • Adhering to daily tool control using tool chits and conducting toolbox inventories at the start and end of each shift.
  • Setting up and operating various machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to manufacture metal components to exacting tolerances.
  • Interpreting blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications to determine the sequence of operations and necessary setups.
  • Utilizing a range of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Performing standard shop calculations related to work dimensions, tooling, feeds, and speeds.
  • Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points for machining layout.
  • Assembling precision components into mechanical systems and determining required materials and parts.
  • Monitoring and verifying quality in accordance with statistical process controls.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Possessing comprehensive knowledge of the machinist role.
  • Understanding both general and detailed aspects of the job and their practical applications.
  • Receiving limited supervision, with no instructions needed for routine tasks.
  • Assisting in the orientation, training, and oversight of lower-level employees.
  • Resolving most inquiries and issues independently, escalating complex matters as necessary.
  • Maintaining frequent contact with individuals from other departments and external organizations for information exchange.

This position typically follows a 9/80 work schedule, allowing employees to enjoy every other Friday off. Competitive relocation assistance may also be available.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent with 6 years of additional education and/or related experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Capability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
  • Able to work in a standing position for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift or move a minimum of lbs. for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Experience operating manual machines and performing setups.
  • Proficiency in using common shop hand tools and cordless drill motors.
  • Skill in assembling parts and assemblies using standard hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a CNC programmer and familiarity with NX software.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Experience with 3/5 axis CNC and familiarity with HAAS control.
  • Ability to manually program CNCs from 2D drawings.
  • Experience with G code.
  • Proven ability to address unforeseen issues during machining processes.
  • Availability for overtime and weekend work as needed.
  • Strong understanding of materials selection and machining processes.

Salary Range: $59,300 - $98,800

This salary range serves as a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.
