Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is in search of a Machinist 4. This role is based in Roy, UT and supports the Sentinel program.

Key Responsibilities:

This position entails machining components according to specifications by setting up and operating CNC machinery. The Machinist is accountable for:

  • Ensuring product quality through in-process and final inspections.
  • Maintaining and caring for equipment.
  • Ensuring tooling and materials are ready for use.
  • Upholding a clean and safe work environment.

The individual will also be expected to provide training to others on all aspects of CNC equipment setup, operation, and maintenance. Responsibilities include adhering to daily tool control protocols using tool chits and conducting toolbox inventories at the start and end of each shift. The role involves setting up and operating various machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to manufacture metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to precise tolerances and dimensions. The Machinist interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determines the sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup; utilizes a range of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments; performs standard shop calculations related to work dimensions, tooling, feeds, and speeds; measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining; fits and assembles precision components into mechanical systems; and identifies necessary materials, parts, and equipment.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the machinist role.
  • Thorough understanding of general and detailed job aspects and their practical applications to typical problems and situations.
  • Limited supervision provided.
  • Independently managing routine tasks, with general guidance on new assignments.
  • Assisting in orienting, training, assigning, and reviewing the work of junior employees.
  • Resolving most inquiries and issues, escalating complex matters as needed.
  • Recognizing that errors may be challenging to detect and could lead to significant consequences.
  • Frequent contact with individuals from other departments and external organizations to exchange information of moderate importance.

This position typically follows a 9/80 work schedule, allowing employees to work nine-hour days from Monday to Thursday and take every other Friday off. Competitive relocation assistance may also be available.

Qualifications Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent with 6 years of additional education and/or related experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Capability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
  • Able to work in a standing position for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift or move a minimum of weight for up to 12 hours per day; pushing or pulling weight occasionally throughout the workday.
  • Experience operating manual machines and performing setups.
  • Proficient in using common shop hand tools and cordless drill motors.
  • Ability to assemble parts and assemblies using standard hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a CNC programmer and familiarity with NX software.
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Experience with 3/5 axis CNC and familiarity with HAAS control is preferred.
  • Ability to manually program CNCs from 2D drawings.
  • Experience with G code.
  • Demonstrated capability to resolve unique issues that arise during machining processes.
  • Availability to work overtime and weekends as required.
  • Strong knowledge of materials selection and machining processes.

Salary Range: $59,300 - $98,800
This salary range serves as a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions. Employees may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay, designed to reward individual contributions and share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director roles may qualify for Long Term Incentives.
