Job Overview

Position Summary: The Senior Accounting Specialist is responsible for the upkeep and evaluation of financial records, the creation of accounting schedules, reports, and financial statements; as well as the preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations, ensuring adherence to generally accepted accounting principles and organizational policies, procedures, and contracts.

Key Responsibilities: The following outlines the essential functions for this role but does not limit the tasks that may be assigned.

  1. Reconcile general ledger, subsidiary ledger, and external accounts.
  2. Prepare and disseminate monthly financial statements.
  3. Examine monthly financials for discrepancies, investigate causes, and suggest journal entries.
  4. Prepare and enter journal entries into the accounting system (YARDI).
  5. Review and categorize check requests for various companies and cash accounts.
  6. Assist with ad-hoc requests for support.
  7. Authorize invoices for payment and ensure timely processing.
  8. Provide assistance to bookkeepers regarding bank reconciliation inquiries.
  9. Prepare annual 1099 filings.
  10. Compile agency-required reports on an annual basis.
  11. Support various audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements.
  12. Review property receivables and payables for inaccuracies, monitor property alerts.
  13. Process payables as necessary for assigned properties; record electronic transactions.
  14. Assist property managers with accounting-related inquiries and problem-solving.
  15. Post monthly rent and subsidy payments as needed.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

6. Experience with Yardi is advantageous.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.

A minimum of three years of experience in comprehensive bookkeeping or education in a related discipline is required. A combination of work and educational experience may be acceptable.

Language Proficiency: Ability to read, interpret, and analyze financial records. Ability to compose business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups and individuals.

Mathematical Competence: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret and analyze financial reports, including general ledgers, account details, and trial balances. Ability to conceptualize the accounting cycle and understand the overall impact of financial transactions. Ability to gather data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make informed recommendations.

Additional Skills and Abilities:

1. Possession of a valid California Driver's License, a clean driving record, and automobile insurance as per California state requirements.

2. Proficient in computer software and systems: Windows XP, Excel, Word, Outlook, and web browsers.

3. Familiarity with YARDI accounting software is a significant advantage.

4. Experience in real estate, affordable housing, or USDA Rural Development is beneficial.
