New Haven, Connecticut, United States General Biological Full time

About General Biological:

General Biological (GB) is an innovative industrial chemical and hardware manufacturing organization focused on creating the next generation of sustainable, cost-effective biomanufacturing solutions.

Our mission is to usher in a new era of chemical products and physical materials sourced from renewable carbohydrates instead of fossil fuels.

At the core of our strategy is vertical integration - placing ourselves at the crossroads of biotechnology, chemistry, and integrated hardware-software engineering to swiftly scale our groundbreaking technology platform.

The GB platform utilizes a non-model organism with exceptional metabolic adaptability and minimal sterility requirements, enabling us to truly industrialize biotechnology.

By developing custom bioreactor hardware and downstream operations, we fully exploit these attributes to significantly lower capital and operational expenses while accelerating implementation.

GB is assembling our foundational team to join us in establishing a generational company that will revolutionize scalable bioproduction practices for contemporary heavy industry.

Position Summary:
We are in search of a chemical engineer to devise and implement strategies for downstream processing and separations.

This role necessitates a background in classical unit operations, including but not limited to:
crystallization, ion-exchange, liquid-liquid extraction, filtration (TFF, UF, NF), electrodialysis, and more.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in scaling processes to pilot or demonstration levels. Furthermore, the candidate will have a track record of identifying, assessing, and applying emerging unit operations to enhance process metrics.

As GB pursues vertical integration, you will encounter exciting opportunities to contribute to interdisciplinary project teams focused on comprehensive hardware and process solutions.

We seek an individual who excels in project ownership, ensuring timely execution, managing independent work streams, and aligning efforts with our overarching vision.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Plan and execute the design, development, and construction of separation processes.

2. Assist in the creation of innovative process flow schemes centered around continuous bioproduction strategies that integrate bioreactor design with upstream and downstream processes.

3. Engage in cross-functional team-based projects with biologists, chemists, and engineers to optimize end-to-end processes and ensure seamless, efficient, and cost-effective integration of bioreactor systems with fermentation, DSP, and formulation strategies.

4. Lead a team of engineers, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure project success.

5. Contribute to the development of intellectual property by documenting novel concepts as invention disclosures and participating in the patent application process.

Required Qualifications:
1. B.S. in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a related field with 2+ years of relevant industry experience in process development.

2. Strong foundation in separation unit operations (filtration, extraction, crystallization, ion-exchange) and their development.

3. Proficiency in process modeling (i.e., sizing unit operations, constructing process flow diagrams, and mass balances).

4. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome technical challenges.

5. Demonstrated capability to execute complex projects and meet demanding timelines.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of process control systems design and automation and continuous process intensification.

2. Background in analytical chemistry for quality control; familiarity with NMR, HPLC, MS, FTIR, etc.

3. Prior experience with the design and development of bioprocess separation strategies, particularly related to scale-up and process optimization.

4. Practical mechanical and industrial site experience with pilot scale and larger bioprocess equipment and troubleshooting biological process plants.

5. Familiarity with fluid dynamics, mass transfer, and heat transfer in bioreactor systems.
