Position Overview

As a Community Engagement Specialist, you will serve as a vital connection between Purdue University’s research initiatives and the residents of Indiana. Your role will involve crafting innovative educational experiences that tackle local challenges. Committed to enhancing the quality of life for both current and future residents, you will collaborate with various local, county, and state agencies, as well as partner organizations, businesses, and educational institutions to assess community needs, design, implement, and manage impactful educational programs, and offer valuable resources and expertise to the community.

This role includes specific responsibilities centered around 4-H Youth Development. By delivering evidence-based educational opportunities, Indiana 4-H aims to be the leading community-focused youth program, fostering the growth and empowerment of young individuals to realize their full potential. As a 4-H Youth Development Specialist, you will guide youth in recognizing their unique strengths, resilience, and lifelong learning capabilities, encouraging them to set personal goals and practice self-determination. You will collaborate with community partners to create educational opportunities that emphasize science, citizenship, and healthy living. A key aspect of your role will be to lead the county 4-H program, focusing on clubs, groups, and youth education initiatives. Engaging and nurturing a dedicated volunteer base is essential for the success and sustainability of the local 4-H program, and you will play a significant role in recruiting, training, and developing these volunteers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with state and local advisory committees to conduct needs assessments that identify critical community issues.
  • Design and implement effective and contemporary educational programs, ensuring thorough evaluation of their impact.
  • Strive to reach diverse audiences and ensure equitable access to educational programs and facilities.
  • Identify, recruit, and cultivate volunteer leadership essential for advancing Purdue Extension's mission.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with colleagues, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Articulate and promote the value of Extension education to key stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Seek and develop external funding sources to enhance educational programming.
  • Participate in or lead teams to broaden the scope and impact of Extension programming.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in educational program development, delivery, and evaluation, particularly in youth development and volunteer management.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree and equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in computer technology for preparing reports, presentations, and data analysis.
  • Understanding of educational methodologies and the ability to effectively communicate and teach program-specific content.
  • Ability to engage with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Strong skills in communication, leadership, mentoring, teamwork, and group processes.
  • Flexibility and creativity in a dynamic work environment.
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
Additional Information:
  • This position may be filled at either the Community Engagement Specialist or Senior Community Engagement Specialist level, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
  • A valid driver's license is required for all positions.
  • A background check is a prerequisite for employment in this role.
  • Travel using a personal vehicle is expected, with mileage reimbursement provided.
  • Evening and weekend work may be necessary as part of this position.
