Job Summary

Oklahoma City Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Paraprofessional - ELL/Bilingual to support the instructional program within an assigned classroom. The successful candidate will work with individual and/or small groups of students, providing academic support and language assistance to English Language Learners (ELLs).

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist ELL students with lesson assignments, reinforcing language skills, numbers, alphabet, and computer learning programs.
  • Communicate and collaborate with teachers to evaluate progress and implement classroom objectives.
  • Facilitate cooperative work and cross-cultural understanding between ELL students and native English speakers.
  • Provide feedback to teachers regarding ELL students' progress and challenges.
  • Monitor students in various settings, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Perform general clerical tasks, such as preparing instructional materials and maintaining records.
  • Report observations and incidents related to students, communicating information to instructional and administrative personnel.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED, with one of the following:
    • Tier 1: Completed at least 48 credit hours of college study, passed the OGET test, or passed the Education Testing Service Parapro Assessment Test (passing score is 455) or the Workkeys Assessment (Passing score is 4 or better on all three parts).
    • Tier 2 (Special Education): In addition to Tier 1, a special education paraprofessional must complete the following requirements:
    • OSDE special education paraprofessional training through Pepper, career technology centers, or other state-approved training providers.
    • Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid, maintaining current certification.
    • Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens yearly training, and
    • Six hours of professional development each year.
  • Successfully completed the Bilingual Skills Test.
  • Demonstrated ability to fluently speak, write, read, and comprehend multiple languages.
  • Operates standard office equipment, including using pertinent software applications.
  • Performs basic math, reads a variety of manuals, writes documents following prescribed formats, and/or presents information to others.
  • Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development and learning styles, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Ability to schedule activities, collate data, and use basic, job-related equipment.
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals, work with a variety of data, and utilize job-related equipment.
  • Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with students whose primary language is not English.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to read, interpret, and transcribe written material and other required duties.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone.
  • Requires some stooping, bending, stretching, and occasional lifting not to exceed 25 pounds.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes stressful conditions in order to meet business needs and strict deadlines.
Work Environment
  • Office duties will be performed in a well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.
