Position Overview:
This role serves as a vital support to the Pathology department, providing essential assistance to Pathologists.

The Senior Pathologist Assistant is responsible for various tasks including:

  • Accessioning cases as necessary
  • Conducting gross examinations and sampling of tissue specimens across varying complexities
  • Performing evisceration and safeguarding during autopsies
  • Compiling and dictating preliminary autopsy findings
  • Preparing and collecting tissue for specialized studies
  • Evaluating and sampling tissues during frozen sections
  • Cutting, staining, and cover slipping frozen section specimens
  • Documenting surgical autopsy cases through photography
  • Opening and selecting tissue for The Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN)
  • Maintaining gross room and morgue supplies
  • Disposing of outdated specimens when required
  • Identifying and resolving labeling discrepancies
  • Training Pathology Assistants I when appropriate
  • Assisting in procedural documentation and updates
All responsibilities are performed under varying levels of supervision as determined by the Pathology Physician Assistant or the supervising Pathologist.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, candidates must possess:

  • An Associate's Degree with a Post Baccalaureate in Biology, Zoology, Pathology, or Medicine, along with one year of relevant experience as a Pathologist Assistant, including grossing specimens under the supervision of a certified Pathologist; or
  • A Bachelor's degree in Biology/Zoology with three years of relevant experience in pathology assistance, including grossing specimens under supervision; or
  • Successful completion of accredited Histotechnology course requirements with HT (ASCP) Certification and an Associate degree, or an Associate degree with HT (ASCP) Certification and additional coursework in Anatomy and Physiology, along with five years of relevant experience in grossing specimens.
Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills with Pathologists and other medical professionals regarding specimen processing, as well as a keen attention to detail to identify significant gross abnormalities.

Proficiency in computer applications such as Windows and lab information systems is also required.
