Join the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department as a Water Utility Operations Manager.

The San Bernardino Municipal Water Department is on the lookout for a proactive individual who thrives in a dynamic setting. This role entails the strategic planning, organization, execution, and oversight of the installation, upkeep, operation, and repair of electrical systems and apparatus, water treatment facilities, pumps, boosters, pressure-regulating devices, hydro-generation, geothermal, and chlorination equipment. Responsibilities also include the construction of pumping stations, scheduling, delegating, monitoring, and inspecting ongoing and completed work.

The Water Utility Operations Manager will oversee and coordinate the operations of the Department's production and treatment facilities. This position involves supervising subordinate administrative staff and section supervisors, reporting directly to the Director of Water Utility.

As a key responder, the incumbent may be required to address emergency operational conditions outside of regular working hours.

The ideal candidate will possess an associate's degree in engineering, physical sciences, business administration, or a related field, alongside a minimum of five years of journey-level experience, including four years in a supervisory capacity within water utility engineering, operations, construction management, and maintenance. Additionally, a valid California Class 'C' driver's license, a California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Operator Grade 3 certificate, and a SWRCB Water Treatment Operator Grade 4 certificate are required. The candidate must also obtain a SWRCB Water Treatment Operator Grade 5 certificate within 36 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent,

And

AA or AS degree in engineering, physical sciences, business administration, or a related field,

And

Five (5) years of journey-level experience, including four (4) years of supervisory experience in water utility engineering, operations, construction management, and maintenance.

Or

Graduation from high school or equivalent, and ten (10) years of journey-level experience, including four (4) years of supervisory/management experience in water utility engineering, operations, construction management, and maintenance.

Certificates: Must possess and maintain a valid California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Treatment Operator Grade 4 Certificate and California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Operator Grade 3 Certificate. Required certificates must be submitted with the application.

Must obtain a California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Treatment Operator Grade 5 certificate within 36 months of appointment.

Necessary Special Requirements

Must possess a valid California Class 'C' driver's license; Note: For out-of-state applicants, a valid driver's license is required, and a valid Class 'C' California driver's license must be obtained within ten (10) days after appointment.

As a key responder, the employee may be required to respond to emergency operational conditions outside of normal working hours.

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions

Frequent need to stand, sit, stoop, walk, and perform other similar actions during the workday. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Incumbents require sufficient mobility to work in an office setting, operate office equipment, transport materials and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, and travel to various locations. Must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction, with vision sufficient to read small print, computer screens, and other printed documents.
