Overview:
As a Registered Nurse, you will deliver both direct and indirect nursing care to individual patients or groups of patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive admission assessments to establish a clear understanding of the patient's condition.
  • Maintain thorough documentation that includes the care plan, interventions, and outcomes, accurately reflecting the patient's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Perform audits on documentation from three different patient charts each year.
  • Prepare transfer and discharge documentation, assessing the patient's needs to determine the appropriate level of care.
  • Adhere to the five rights of medication administration, clearly communicating with patients and their families about the medications being administered.
  • Evaluate patients prior to medication administration, considering allergies, vital signs, potential side effects, and effectiveness, and intervene as necessary.
  • Manage pain effectively based on patient feedback and assessment findings, reassessing and documenting responses in accordance with hospital protocols.

Risk Identification:
Utilize medication references as needed to identify high-risk medications and ensure patient safety.

  • Evaluate patients for potential safety risks upon admission, following hospital policies to initiate appropriate interventions.
  • Assess the educational needs of patients and their families, providing tailored instruction and evaluating their responses to the teaching.
  • Implement the five rights of delegation, coordinating and supervising nursing care delivery while maintaining accountability for delegated tasks.
  • Take on the responsibilities of a charge nurse, demonstrating strong problem-solving, decision-making, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Proactively address unit staffing needs in relation to patient acuity and census, assisting in the orientation and training of new nursing staff.
  • Monitor patients' skin conditions upon admission, during each shift, and at discharge, implementing preventive measures for those at risk of skin breakdown.
  • Comply with Nursing Standards of Practice, including assessment, care planning, interventions, and evaluation of care plans.
  • Conduct walking rounds for shift reports and introductory rounds with assigned patients at the start of each shift.
  • Fulfill all compliance responsibilities associated with the role.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Information:
Licensure: Must possess a valid RN license to practice in the state of Connecticut. Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) certification is required within three months of hire.

  • Occupational Risks: Exposure to significant occupational hazards.
  • Physical Effort: Requires very heavy physical effort, with the ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force.
