Position Overview: The Interventional Radiology Nurse Specialist provides essential clinical leadership and specialized knowledge in the field of interventional radiology. This role is pivotal in addressing the comprehensive physical, psychological, social, and educational needs of patients and their families, while also offering expert consultation to fellow healthcare professionals regarding patient care and nursing practices.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Primarily operates during day shifts as required by departmental needs, with on-call duties as necessary.
  2. Assists Interventional Radiologists with daily procedures and executes physician directives.
  3. Conducts nursing assessments at the time of procedures or within one week of initiation, including medication reconciliation.
  4. Collects medical histories, evaluates patients for specific needs (such as skin reactions, contrast reactions, vital signs, dietary requirements), and formulates appropriate care and recovery plans. Utilizes clinical judgment to implement emergency interventions and actions to ensure patient safety and optimal clinical outcomes.
  5. Educates patients, their families, and healthcare providers about procedures, treatments, potential side effects, and symptom management strategies.
  6. Delivers direct patient care as necessary: adjusts and activates medical equipment, connects patients to monitoring devices when required, oversees IVs and other equipment for both outpatients and inpatients, conducts safety assessments, administers medications as prescribed by physicians, and assists with all facets of nursing care.
  7. Records all assessments and clinical care provided, referrals for services, communications with other departments or physician offices, and medication administration in the medical record. Aids patients with medical leave and related documentation.
  8. Maintains communication with other disciplines, including nutritional support, speech therapy, social work, navigators, social services, inpatient staff, and office personnel.
  9. Exhibits a positive professional demeanor by demonstrating excellent patient experience skills, effective communication, and professional conduct and appearance.
  10. Assists Radiologists, Front Desk Staff, and Radiologic Technologists with scheduling and workflow management to ensure patient safety and efficient operations. Provides nursing support across all areas of the Imaging Department as needed.
  11. Meets all compliance responsibilities associated with the role, including managing supplies in examination rooms and equipment.
  12. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Required: Associate Degree or higher, a minimum of three years of experience, current Registered Nurse License, and CPR certification.

Preferred: Experience in an Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab setting.

Working Conditions:
  • Manual: Requires significant manual skills and coordination.
  • Occupational: Some occupational risks involved.
  • Physical Effort: Very heavy effort; may require exerting up to 50 lbs. of force.
