Position Overview: The role involves delivering both direct and indirect nursing services to patients or groups of patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Patient Assessment: Conducts comprehensive admission evaluations to establish a clear understanding of the patient's condition. Maintains detailed documentation that integrates the care plan, interventions, and outcomes reflecting the patient's overall health status. Performs regular reassessments on a shift-to-shift basis and completes transfer/discharge documentation to evaluate the patient's ongoing care needs.
  2. Medication Management: Adheres to the 5 Rights of Medication Administration, ensuring clear communication with patients and their families regarding medications. Evaluates the patient prior to medication administration, taking into account allergies, vital signs, potential side effects, and effectiveness, while providing necessary interventions. Manages pain based on patient feedback and assessment findings, documenting responses in accordance with hospital protocols.
  3. Patient Safety: Evaluates patients for potential safety hazards upon admission and follows established hospital policies to ensure patient safety. Implements interventions based on identified risk factors.
  4. Education for Patients and Families: Identifies the educational needs of patients and their families, developing and delivering tailored instructional materials. Monitors and documents the responses to educational efforts.
  5. Delegation of Duties: Applies the principles of delegation effectively, overseeing the delivery of nursing care and maintaining accountability for delegated tasks. Clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of team members involved in patient care.
  6. Leadership Responsibilities: Fosters a collaborative work environment through exemplary personal conduct and teamwork. Takes on the role of charge nurse, demonstrating problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills. Proactively addresses staffing needs based on patient acuity and census, and participates in the orientation and training of new nursing staff.
  7. Skin Integrity Management: Assesses the skin condition of patients upon admission and throughout their stay, implementing preventive measures for those at risk of skin breakdown. Stages pressure ulcers according to established guidelines and follows protocols based on assessments.
  8. Care Delivery Standards: Complies with Nursing Standards of Practice, including assessment, care planning, interventions, and evaluation of care plans. Engages in walking rounds for shift reports and initial patient introductions.
  9. Performs additional duties as required.
  10. Ensures compliance with all relevant responsibilities associated with the position.
Qualifications: An Associate's degree in Nursing is required. A valid nursing license to practice is mandatory. Experience requirements range from zero to six months, with certifications such as Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) expected within three months of hire, along with additional unit-specific certifications as necessary.

Working Conditions: The role requires significant manual dexterity and physical effort, with the potential to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. Exposure to various environmental factors is expected.

Credentials: Registered Nurse (RN) certification is required.
