Position Overview:

The Chief Financial Officer plays a crucial role in overseeing the financial operations of Literacy Minnesota. This leadership position is essential for ensuring fiscal health, regulatory compliance, and long-term sustainability while advancing the organization’s mission to enhance literacy and drive transformative change. The CFO will collaborate closely with the President and the executive leadership team to align financial strategies with organizational goals, improve operational efficiency, and foster an inclusive workplace that reflects Literacy Minnesota's core values of lifelong learning, justice, self-determination, equity, and innovation.

The work environment is typically an office or remote setting, with approximately 60% of the time spent on computer-related tasks. The role may require travel within the metro area and occasionally across the U.S. Longer workdays may be necessary at times. Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time role eligible for health, dental, vision, PTO, and a 401(k) plan with matching contributions. The salary range for this position is $80,000-$95,000 annually.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategic Direction:

  • Formulate and execute financial strategies that align with organizational objectives and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Oversee budget preparation, financial forecasting, and reporting processes.
  • Provide strategic insights to the President based on financial assessments and forecasts.
  • Ensure financial strategies are in harmony with Literacy Minnesota’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Hold the organization accountable for integrating equity and inclusion into financial decision-making.

Financial Management:

  • Direct all financial operations, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, auditing, and reporting.
  • Review and refine financial policies to embed equity, inclusion, and anti-racist practices.
  • Guarantee timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with applicable regulations and GAAP.
  • Manage the annual audit process, coordinate with external auditors, and prepare necessary documentation.
  • Monitor cash flow and financial transactions to maintain fiscal stability.

Systems Integration and Process Improvement:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Operations to align financial systems with organizational processes.
  • Implement and sustain effective financial management software and tools.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance financial processes and internal controls for improved efficiency and accuracy.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Supervise and mentor finance and accounting staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Create training programs to enhance financial literacy across the organization.
  • Encourage a positive and inclusive workplace that reflects the organization’s values.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the President and executive team to support strategic initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate financial information to stakeholders, including the Board of Directors and senior management.
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure financial practices align with programmatic goals.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in financial management and accounting, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • 3+ years of experience in team leadership and management.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate future trends and incorporate them into planning.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, preferably Sage Intacct.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial concepts clearly.
  • High integrity and dependability, with a strong results-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work effectively in an organization committed to equity and representation.
  • Capacity to engage with diverse groups from various social and economic backgrounds.
  • Well-organized and decisive, balancing long-term vision with day-to-day operations.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors in a nonprofit context.
  • Experience integrating payroll and CRM software with financial systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA certification or advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MPA).
  • Experience with financial management software and systems integration.
  • Commitment to values of lifelong learning, justice, self-determination, equity, and innovation.
  • Prior experience in a multi-program nonprofit organization.
  • Leadership training or certification is a plus.
  • Strong interest in literacy and social causes.
