Description:

The Sr. Husbandry Tech is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and maintenance of the vivarium and its live collections, ensuring the welfare of animals and facilities in accordance with established departmental policies and Good Documentation Practices (GDP). This role involves supervising the Husbandry Technicians, managing schedules, ensuring adherence to high standards of animal care, facility maintenance, and accurate record-keeping, as well as coordinating the receipt and integration of new animals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervisory Responsibilities - 30%

  • Supervise and mentor Husbandry Technicians, providing training, guidance, and performance evaluations.
  • Develop and manage work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and efficient operations.
  • Ensure adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and Good Documentation Practices (GDP) by all team members.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, encouraging teamwork and professional development.

Vivarium Management - 25%

  • Oversee the well-being and welfare of animals, ensuring compliance with departmental standards and GDP.
  • Supervise daily cleaning and maintenance activities to maintain a clean, odor-free, and low-stress environment for animals.
  • Monitor and address potential animal health or behavioral issues, coordinating with veterinary staff as needed.
  • Ensure the preparation and administration of special diets according to Study Director's protocols.
  • Oversee the acclimation and enrichment of animals for integration into experimental studies.

Animal Receiving and Integration - 10%

  • Coordinate the receipt of new animals, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with established protocols.
  • Facilitate the acclimation process for newly received animals, ensuring a smooth transition into the vivarium.
  • Conduct health assessments and quarantine procedures as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal receipts and integration activities in accordance with GDP.

Facilities Management - 15%

  • Oversee routine maintenance tasks to ensure the proper functioning of facilities, including general HVAC and plumbing.
  • Coordinate repairs and upkeep of building systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulations in all maintenance activities.

Documentation and Reporting - 20%

  • Ensure accurate documentation of all husbandry activities, including daily care routines, observations, and health monitoring, in accordance with GDP.
  • Maintain detailed records and prepare reports as required.
  • Monitor compliance with GDP standards and address any discrepancies.
  • Ensure team members are trained and consistently follow GDP.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in animal science, Pre-Veterinary, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working with animals, including progressive supervisory or related responsibilities such as training and mentoring; equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience in Vivarium, Veterinary, or other animal care settings working with large mammals.
  • AALAS, ALAT, or higher vet tech certification.
