Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Student Success Coach provides proactive, customized, holistic, and consistent support to undergraduate students to ensure they progress through the academic, career, and skill development opportunities in their student journey. Utilizing a case management approach, coaches positively influence the undergraduate student experience, as well as student retention, persistence, graduation rates, and post-graduation opportunities. Coaches will help students navigate college and respond to challenges by making referrals to appropriate resources and assisting them in identifying internships, work, or other opportunities that will contribute to their success.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The incumbent performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
  • Work closely with the Managing Director and other members of the PO community to identify and implement strategies to support enrollment, persistence, and success in support of the College's HSI goals.
  • Manage caseload of students year-round, including but not limited to: creation and maintenance of individualized success plans, detailed coaching notes, tracking retention and persistence predictions for students.
  • Coach students throughout their undergraduate experience in conjunction and collaboration with their Academic and Faculty Advisors to equip, resource, and guide students in achieving academic goals.
  • Provide programming, support, resources, and outreach to students in special populations.
  • Develop supportive, proactive relationships that allow the coach to challenge, support and counsel the student, providing a trusting relationship where students can share their thoughts, aspirations, concerns, and interests.
  • Teach one introduction to college (Success at PO) course each term.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to contribute to the continuous quality of programs meeting HSI goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with higher education issues related to retention, persistence, student success and academic supports, particularly for adult learners at Hispanic Serving Institutions.
  • Knowledge of best practices for working with diverse student populations, and particularly with the unique needs of Hispanic and first-generation undergraduate college students.
  • Understanding of best practices and strategies for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on college campuses, preferably at an HSI or other MSI
SKILLS:
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred: Ability to read, write, and communicate orally in Spanish and English with high levels of proficiency is preferred.
  • Exceptional oral, written, analytical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; skilled at exercising patience and showcasing professionalism in every interaction.
  • Highly skilled at handling sensitive and confidential information and demonstrating sensitivity, respect and understanding of adult students, diverse populations and various perspectives and learning styles.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and cultural competency to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a diverse population of student, faculty, and staff.
  • Proficient in academic office technologies such as Microsoft Office, CRM technology, student success software.
ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner, orally and in writing, in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, staff, managers, and others involved with the program.
  • Ability to balance priorities to accomplish assigned tasks within the required time frame and be able to shift quickly between several tasks without loss of continuity.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, manage time, and meet program deadlines.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise and apply sound judgment and decision-making skills and to handle highly confidential material, complying with FERPA.
  • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required
  • Access to reliable transportation to attend events (if using personal car - DMV report will be requested and copy of car insurance bi-annually).
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
  • Master's degree required in education, counseling, psychology, student affairs or other related field
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years providing/facilitating educational programs or services (individual, small group, large group settings), professional advising experience, or student success work with undergraduate, adult learners.
  • Previous experience supporting and working with Latinx and underserved populations required.
  • Experience with event planning and management (in-person, hybrid, and virtual programs).
  • Experience facilitating collaboration across curricular and co-curricular departments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promoting social justice on campus and beyond.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students coming to Pacific Oaks College, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.
