POSITION SUMMARY:
The Academic Success Advisor plays a crucial role in delivering tailored, comprehensive, and ongoing support to undergraduate students, ensuring their advancement through academic, career, and skill enhancement opportunities throughout their educational journey. By employing a case management strategy, advisors significantly enhance the undergraduate experience, contributing to improved student retention, persistence, graduation rates, and post-graduation pathways. Advisors assist students in navigating their college experience and overcoming challenges by connecting them with suitable resources and helping them identify internships, employment, or other opportunities that foster their success.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The individual will engage in a variety of routine tasks within established guidelines and will receive detailed guidance on new projects and assignments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate closely with the Managing Director and other stakeholders to devise and implement strategies that bolster enrollment, persistence, and overall success in alignment with the institution's goals.
- Maintain a year-round caseload of students, which includes developing and updating personalized success plans, maintaining detailed coaching records, and tracking retention and persistence metrics.
- Provide coaching throughout the undergraduate experience in partnership with Academic and Faculty Advisors, equipping students with the necessary resources and guidance to achieve their academic objectives.
- Offer programming, resources, and outreach initiatives tailored to special student populations.
- Cultivate supportive and proactive relationships that empower students to share their aspirations, concerns, and interests, fostering a trusting environment.
- Instruct an introductory college course each term.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned to enhance the quality of programs aimed at meeting institutional objectives.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE:
- Proven understanding and experience with higher education challenges related to retention, persistence, and student success, particularly for adult learners at Hispanic Serving Institutions.
- Familiarity with best practices for engaging diverse student populations, especially those of Hispanic and first-generation college students.
- Insight into effective strategies for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic settings.
SKILLS:
- Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is preferred, with the ability to communicate effectively in both languages.
- Strong oral, written, analytical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating patience and professionalism in all interactions.
- High proficiency in managing sensitive and confidential information while respecting diverse perspectives and learning styles.
- Strong intercultural communication skills and cultural competency to work collaboratively with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
- Proficient in using academic office technologies, including Microsoft Office and student success software.
ABILITIES:
- Capable of professional communication in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time to meet deadlines.
- Competent in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
- Skilled in organizing meetings and special events.
- Ability to maintain accurate recordkeeping systems.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in handling confidential materials.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Access to reliable transportation for attending events.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- A Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, student affairs, or a related field is required.
Experience:
- At least 2 years of experience in educational program facilitation, professional advising, or student success initiatives with undergraduate adult learners.
- Experience working with Latinx and underserved populations is essential.
- Background in event planning and management for various program formats.
- Proven ability to foster collaboration across academic and co-curricular departments.
- Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promoting social justice.
- Sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Office environment with a typical temperature of 70 degrees.
- Noise levels range from quiet to moderately noisy.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
Physical Requirements:
Includes standing, lifting (up to 15 lbs), walking, and frequent communication.

TRAVEL: Minimal travel required, up to 5% of total time.
