POSITION SUMMARY:

The Academic Success Advisor is dedicated to delivering proactive, tailored, and comprehensive support to undergraduate students, ensuring their advancement through academic, career, and skill enhancement opportunities throughout their educational journey. By employing a case management strategy, the advisor plays a crucial role in enhancing the undergraduate student experience, contributing to student retention, persistence, graduation rates, and opportunities following graduation. The advisor assists students in navigating their college experience and addressing challenges by connecting them with suitable resources and helping them identify internships, employment, or other opportunities that foster their success.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The advisor undertakes a variety of routine tasks within established policies and procedures, receiving detailed guidance on new projects and assignments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate closely with the Managing Director and other members of the academic community to devise and implement strategies that bolster enrollment, persistence, and success in alignment with the institution's goals.
  • Manage a caseload of students throughout the year, which includes creating and maintaining personalized success plans, detailed coaching documentation, and tracking retention and persistence forecasts for students.
  • Guide students throughout their undergraduate journey in partnership with their Academic and Faculty Advisors, equipping and supporting them in achieving their academic objectives.
  • Provide programming, resources, and outreach initiatives for students from special populations.
  • Foster supportive and proactive relationships that enable the advisor to challenge, support, and counsel students, creating a trusting environment where they can express their thoughts, aspirations, concerns, and interests.
  • Instruct one introductory college course each term.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to enhance the quality of programs meeting institutional goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Proven understanding and experience with higher education issues related to retention, persistence, student success, and academic support, particularly for adult learners at Hispanic Serving Institutions.
  • Familiarity with best practices for engaging diverse student populations, especially the unique needs of Hispanic and first-generation undergraduate students.
  • Insight into effective strategies for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on college campuses, preferably within an HSI or other Minority Serving Institution.

SKILLS:

  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) preferred: Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in both languages.
  • Exceptional oral, written, analytical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities; adept at demonstrating patience and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Highly skilled in managing sensitive and confidential information while respecting the diverse backgrounds and learning styles of adult students.
  • Proficient in intercultural communication and cultural competency to collaborate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Competent in using academic office technologies such as Microsoft Office, CRM systems, and student success software.

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate professionally, both orally and in writing, in various settings with students, faculty, staff, and program stakeholders.
  • Capacity to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time to meet program deadlines.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data accurately.
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating meetings and special events.
  • Ability to develop and maintain efficient recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Capacity to exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills while handling confidential materials.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed, along with the ability to travel as required.
  • Access to reliable transportation for attending events.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • A Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, student affairs, or a related field is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in providing educational programs or services, professional advising, or student success initiatives with undergraduate adult learners.
  • Previous experience working with Latinx and underserved populations is essential.
  • Experience in event planning and management for in-person, hybrid, and virtual programs.
  • Proven ability to facilitate collaboration across curricular and co-curricular departments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promoting social justice within the campus community.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Office environment with a typical temperature of 70 degrees.
  • Noise levels range from quiet to moderately noisy.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

Physical Requirements:

Includes standing, lifting (up to 15 lbs), walking, hearing, speaking, reaching, writing, and typing.

Mental Requirements:

TRAVEL: Minimal travel required (up to 5% of total time).

DECISION MAKING:

Position governed by institutional policies and departmental procedures, requiring independent judgment in fulfilling responsibilities.

Routine exchange of information and conflict resolution with students and employees.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

This role does not involve budget management.
