Academic Success Advisor

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Academic Success Advisor is dedicated to offering tailored, comprehensive, and ongoing assistance to undergraduate students, ensuring their advancement through academic, career, and skill enhancement pathways. By employing a case management methodology, advisors play a crucial role in enhancing the undergraduate experience, thereby positively impacting student retention, persistence, graduation rates, and post-graduation prospects. Advisors assist students in navigating their educational journey and overcoming obstacles by connecting them with relevant resources and helping them identify internships, employment, or other avenues that foster their success.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The individual in this role executes a variety of standard tasks within established guidelines and receives detailed guidance on new initiatives and assignments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate closely with the Managing Director and other stakeholders to devise and implement strategies that bolster enrollment, persistence, and overall success in alignment with the institution's goals.
- Maintain a year-round caseload of students, which includes developing and updating personalized success plans, maintaining detailed coaching records, and tracking retention and persistence metrics.
- Provide coaching to students throughout their undergraduate journey in partnership with their Academic and Faculty Advisors, equipping and guiding them to achieve their academic objectives.
- Offer programming, resources, and outreach specifically tailored to students from diverse backgrounds.
- Cultivate supportive and proactive relationships that empower students to share their aspirations, concerns, and interests, fostering a trusting environment.
- Instruct one introductory college course each term.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned to enhance the quality of programs aimed at meeting institutional objectives.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE:
- Proven understanding and experience with higher education challenges related to retention, persistence, and student success, particularly for adult learners at Hispanic Serving Institutions.
- Familiarity with effective practices for engaging diverse student populations, especially the unique needs of Hispanic and first-generation college students.
- Insight into strategies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic settings, preferably at an HSI or similar institution.
SKILLS:
- Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is preferred, with the ability to communicate effectively in both languages.
- Exceptional oral and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal abilities, demonstrating patience and professionalism in all interactions.
- Highly adept at managing sensitive and confidential information while respecting diverse perspectives and learning styles.
- Strong intercultural communication skills and cultural competence to collaborate effectively with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
- Proficient in academic office technologies, including Microsoft Office and student success software.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate professionally in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, and staff.
- Capacity to prioritize tasks effectively and manage multiple responsibilities without losing focus.
- Ability to organize and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines.
- Competence in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
- Ability to coordinate meetings and special events.
- Capability to develop and maintain effective recordkeeping systems.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in handling confidential materials.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed, with reliable transportation for event attendance.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- A Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, student affairs, or a related field is required.
Experience:
- At least 2 years of experience in educational program facilitation, professional advising, or student success initiatives with undergraduate adult learners.
- Proven experience working with Latinx and underserved populations is essential.
- Experience in event planning and management across various formats.
- Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration across academic and co-curricular departments.
- Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promoting social justice.
- Sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Office environment with a typical temperature of 70 degrees.
- Noise levels range from quiet to moderately noisy.
DECISION MAKING:
This position operates under the policies of the institution, requiring independent judgment to fulfill departmental strategic goals.
CONTACT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regular exchange of information and conflict resolution with students and staff, demonstrating professionalism and leadership.
