Can you deliver a book talk in your sleep? Do you get pumped presenting to classrooms of kids and teachers? Does figuring out the right library resources for a classroom teacher give you satisfaction? Do you like flexing your creative muscles planning hands-on activities to engage youth of all ages? We are looking for a creative, engaging and reliable individual to join our outreach team to help develop and deliver our growing outreach services for youth from Pre-K through grade 12, with a special focus on grades K-5.

You will have duties that cover many aspects of library service-including programs, providing information, readers' advisory, and circulation-but primarily you will provide outstanding outreach in a variety of settings to youth in our community. You'll be the face of the library to many outside of our library's walls.

As Youth Outreach Specialist, you will collaborate with our knowledgeable and experienced staff to deliver services out in the community and in the library. You will need to work effectively with teachers and other community partners, staff from across library departments and customers with diverse backgrounds, abilities and skills.

Our ideal candidate will have a flexible and positive mindset, excellent organizational skills, and be able to creatively manage, problem-solve and prioritize multiple initiatives. A commitment to discussing, integrating, and promoting inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility is vital in order to provide meaningful library services to our community.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with educators and staff at community organizations, including schools, businesses and other public libraries.
  • Prepare and present high-energy presentations for students and teachers, including hands-on activities, book talks, database instruction and promotion of library services/programs.
  • Gather resources on a given topic to provide curricular support to Pre-K-12th grade classrooms, with a special focus on grades K-5.
  • Prepare and present literacy-based and STEM programs for youth and family audiences.
  • Give tours of the library to school and community groups of all ages.
  • Represent the library and present programs at community events, including extracurricular activity/athletic nights and community-wide events.
  • Provide reader's advisory and circulation services on the Bookmobile to support community events and outreach visits.
  • Desk shifts providing reference and reader's advisory in Kids' World (youth ages 0-6th grade) and the Hub (teens grades 7-12).
Requirements & Skills
  • Comfortable speaking to large groups of all ages, from children to adults.
  • A positive attitude and ability to adapt quickly to unexpected circumstances.
  • Experience with or interest in working with underserved or vulnerable populations.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Positive and welcoming communication skills in order to excel in Our Culture.
  • Proficient in using technology (e.g. computers, tablets, internet) to assist customers.
  • A good working knowledge of books, movies and pop culture for youth preferred.
  • Experience working with youth and multicultural audiences preferred.


Education

Bachelor's degree in education, child/adolescent development or related field. Customer service and program experience preferred.

Hours and Scheduling

Part-time position, 25 hours per week. Some flexibility in scheduling is required to support the team and our customers, including evening and weekend hours.

Salary & Benefits

Starting salary $21.60- $26.00/hour depending on qualifications.

Benefits include two weeks of vacation plus sick and personal leave, paid holidays, participation in Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension plan and availability of Roth/457 savings plan.
