The consequences of a compounding or drug selection error, if undetected, could result in serious patient injury. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Minimum of six months specialized training beyond high school. Experience: Minimum one year experience at the pharmacy technician level. Licensure: Licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan is required. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations accurately. Basic typing and word processing skills. Basic computer skills to do order entry, generate reports, retrieve data and diagnose minor printer problems. Ability to stand for long periods of time (at least four and up to eight hours per day) or to walk long distances without difficulty. Interpersonal skills to effectively train technicians and interact with physicians, nurses, and other Health Center personnel to resolve routine distribution issues. Written communication skills necessary to develop and implement departmental distribution procedures. Creative problem solving skills. Good level of judgment and ability to work independently. Analytical skills to effectively resolve controlled substance discrepancies and routine distribution problems. Maintenance of quality assurance standards that ensures a high level of work accuracy. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS General supervision is received from the Manager, Business Operations, Technician Coordinator and Pharmacists ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs all job functions of a Pharmacy Technician II on an as needed basis. Functionally supervises the daily activities of approximately 30 technicians on an as needed basis. Monitors daily work schedule, assigns duties to technicians and revises assignments as needed to adjust to changing work volumes. Consults with the Technician Coordinator when necessary. Proven competency is required before providing services related to compounding . Documents the performance of pharmacy technicians on an ongoing basis and provides input for the preparation of technician performance evaluations. Provides assistance to any member of the pharmacy team when needed, including Technician I and II, purchasing staff and pharmacists. Provides initial aseptic technique intravenous teaching for new technicians, students and interns, including video, practical training, lecture, calculations and readings. Maintains an ongoing testing protocol for intravenous technique by documenting the successful completion of IV testing kit by all technicians on a regular basis. Prepares cytotoxic agents and NICU pharmaceutical products following established departmental, licensing and regulating agency guidelines. Determines, assesses and adjusts technician procedure for efficiently and accurately stocking automated medstations. Participates in monthly meetings with the Technician Coordinator. Completes additional tasks as assigned by the Technician Coordinator. Problem solves with Health System personnel to resolve medication distribution issues. Consults with Nursing and Pharmacy management to modify medications and expand automated medstations throughout the Health System. Determines medstation logistics. Communicates with nursing management to initiate and implement changes in the medication distribution system to provide continuous improvement. Maintains documentation of controlled substances and disposes of waste for all controlled substances as required by regulatory agencies. Repackages controlled substance bulk items and miscellaneous pharmaceuticals not commercially available following established departmental policy and procedure. Selects controlled substance orders for delivery to nursing units, records and verifies inventory adjustments and reconciles all internal discrepancies on a daily basis. Collects, compiles and documents quality assurance data / measures and prepares reports for Pharmacy management. Assists with service and general maintenance problems. Proven competency with pharmacy robotics is required before working with robotics Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
